Allbirds is a manufacturer of very comfortable footwear but did you also know that Allbirds is one of the companies leading the charge in creating sustainable products? In 2021, the company launched the Allbirds Flight Plan - the plan to “cut their carbon footprint in half by the end of 2025, then reduce it to near zero by 2030.” How are they doing this? The following is the interesting and informative explanation from the Allbirds website: “Roughly 57% of footwear and 64% of apparel is made from synthetic materials. The problem with synthetic materials? They’re made from plastics. Plastics come from oil. And oil is a fossil fuel that’s accelerating climate change. What’s even weirder about the link between fashion and fossil fuels is that these materials weren’t widely used in our industry until the 1980s. But we’ve quickly become dependent on them. The reliance on fossil fuels is accelerating climate change, creating negative impacts on waste, biodiversity, and more. Which is why we need to transition back to renewable, natural materials. From day one, we’ve always sought to replace petroleum-based synthetic materials with natural alternatives whenever we can. When we haven’t found suitable alternatives, we’ve either invented our own—like SweetFoam®, our shoe sole material derived from the world’s first carbon negative green EVA—or invested in novel solutions, like Plant Leather, our 100% natural, plant-based leather. Of course, all of this comes with challenges. To help increase durability, we use recycled synthetics to bolster natural material content where we need to, and are innovating around new technologies to increase the performance and longevity of natural materials. On top of that, we know two important truths: we should be minimizing the amount of material we use in the first place to create lighter products, so we're working to redesign packaging and eliminate manufacturing waste. Interesting report but I don't agree with the title -yes this over simplification is addressed as soon as you open the report, but with how people consume content and also how AI might digest this, I think it needs a rethink. That being said, this report does touch on a clear and pressing issue - second hand is not the silver bullet to solve all sustainability woes! Yes it is part of the systemic change that we need to see, but the second hand clothing industry is weighed down by the increasing volume and predominantly low quality of the clothing feeding into it. Also in the UK, our charity shops were never set up to be the funnel for all of our cast-off clothing and they don't have the resources to deal with the sheer volume of clothing that is donated. In essence we need to improve the durability (material and emotional) of all products - and concurrently slow the circle down ♻

❌ Second hand is currently bad for global sustainability according to this new report! 👚👖Over the last ten years the international average number of days a garment is worn before it is thrown away has fallen from approximately 200 to close to 120, a reduction of 36%. The number of garments purchased per capita between 2000 and 2014 increased by about 60% and consumers keep clothing items about half as long as they did 15 years ago. Fast fashion has resulted in a culture in which some estimates suggest that consumers treat the lowest-priced garments as nearly disposable, discarding them after just seven or eight wears. The current overconsumption system is also extremely inefficient and 30-40% of garments produced are never even sold as they go out of fashion. 🌍Second hand can be part of the transition to a more sustainable society, but not in the way that is now being used and promoted. To ensure global sustainability, in line with agreed climate, social and environmental goals, we need to change existing business models, overproduction/overconsumption, the way we shop, what kind of garments and things we truly need, and what lifestyles and societies we want in the future. ♻️The results in the report might be surprising, but the hope of the paper was to trigger a much needed discussion about the actual impact of current second hand and circularity initiatives. 👉 What are your thought on this? Today I'm sharing a story about sustainable fashion. Imagine this, it's rakhi and you've traveled across states to celebrate with your sibling. They take you to a fast fashion store (a place you try to avoid) for their rakhi gift. And you can't say no. Despite knowing fast fashion will fall apart easily. Despite knowing fast fashion means exploited workers. Despite knowing fast fashion means plastic-based fabrics that pollute and contribute to the climate crisis. You can't say no. Because gifts are meant to make people happy and when you tried to refuse they didn't listen. Plus how ever will you encourage them to be sustainable if they associate sustainability with losing what they like? And so you end up at the store. The collection is beautiful. The greenwashing is rampant. 80% recycled polyester most of the clothes scream. But how much is true? You choose to believe they're going green. But it's not enough. And so you wait for your sibling to pick something out. That is the situation I found myself in today. Who would I choose to be? A sister or an environmentalist? Thankfully, I could choose both. Because imperfect sustainability exists. There is the space for everyday consumers to err. After all, while voting with our dollar is important, it's not our sole responsibility. And thankfully, my sister picked something that she actually needs and intends to wear multiple times. She was so proud when she showed me the 100% recycled material tag too. Later, she told me that my honouring of her wishes, made her reluctant to choose something frivolous. While her style is fast fashion, she wanted to find something concious too. All that goes to show, that when talking about sustainability how we approach those who are ignorant or uncaring about climate change matters. We can either make sustainable living an option for them by allowing them to be imperfect, by helping them understand and make better choices. We can be role models. Or we can be the person that makes them think sustainable living is a chore by calling them names, and judging them. There are reasons why my sister can't quit fast fashion: our culture does not allow thrifting and her style is mostly designs which are difficult to make in natural fabrics. And so I think there are reasons for others too. Even if the reason is ignorance. Let's not make sustainability a chore. Let's embrace human errors and help others slowly transition. A million imperfect zero-wasters are better than a hundred burnt out perfectionists after all. What does it even mean to be 'green'? Fair question. And you're not the only one wondering. (Spoiler: this post will not answer the question, because frankly, we aren't certain either.) We know it's good to be 'green'... but we also know 'green' doesn't mean much at all to anyone anymore. (That's semantic satiation — a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning. And ironically, 'semantic satiation' also doesn't mean much to anyone.) Our sustainability lead Aileen Lerch chatted with Bloomberg Law about the need for updated guidelines for words like "green," "sustainable," and "circular" as more and more businesses incorporate impact into their work.
