Natives know best… don’t they? Lots of people think if you know two languages you can translate into and out of both of them But one of the golden rules that most translators and agencies live by is that you only ever translate INTO your native language Here are 5 reasons why: 1. Cultural understanding – native speakers know your target market like the back of their hand, having grown up in the country where the target language is spoken… 2. Linguistic subtleties – native speakers are familiar with things like wordplay and idioms and will know the best ways of expressing any linguistic subtleties found in the source text… 3. Current language usage – native speakers are aware of the ways their language has changed over time. If they’re writing a marketing text for a young audience, they’ll know which expressions would be acceptable to use… 4. Intuition – native speakers have a gut instinct of what sounds right in their own language, even when there isn’t a reason for it or a grammatical rule to explain it… 5. Minor mistakes – native speakers are best placed to spot even the tiniest mistake, avoiding any embarrassing errors! There are some people who disagree with this rule, but we wouldn’t ever go against it Would you be comfortable letting a non-native speaker translate a text for you?

🙂 Google says that we need to generate content within our languages. For getting maximum traffic from the search engine. And I agree with the company. Most of the speakers in the world do not speak English. What does this mean? They also don't search in English on Google. So, what should be done? Your English content should be translated into your native language/multiple languages for your target audience. For example, if your target audience is from Spain, publish Spanish content on your website. And if it is from France, publish French content on your site. For those fellows, who are struggling to get clients, I have a fantastic idea for you. Pitch or cold email your potential clients in their native languages. Their native speakers obviously charge more than you can. So, what would they get? An inexpensive translator for their native language content creation. And what would you get? A handsome amount in dollars. Isn't that great! There is no dearth of English content writers as many of you already know. So there is much competition for you in that language. Learn a new language fast. Try content writing in that language. Also, read their literature books online for the use of local words and phrases. And improve your content writing in that specific language. This is a million-dollar idea if you understand what I am saying to you. I am also learning a new language. And that is Spanish. I love Google translated signs. (As a disclaimer, I am by no means 'making fun' of not knowing a language perfectly...) I think it's really fun and charming when small shops or restaurants make signs that don't make total sense in English, but would make perfect sense in the local language. 🏪🌍 But when it comes to large, international companies, mistakes like this are less charming. 👎 The ad on the last slide came up on my feed the other day. Some people have argued that the mix of English and Norwegian in the copy was done on purpose. I would argue that whether it was intentional or not doesn't entirely matter as it's a confusing ad anyway. Not only is the copy ineffective (and can't actually be understood by any audience that doesn't know at least a little Norwegian), but the English landing page has an incredible amount of spelling errors. 📝 For large companies aiming to earn trust and not come across as ''sketchy'' or impolite to local audiences, language accuracy is crucial. As more companies expand globally, there has been an increase in ads that unintentionally offend audiences due to bad translations, or no understanding of local language. 🌍 For those large companies with sufficient budget, there is really no excuse not to invest in someone that can assist with copy in the local language. To communicate with international audiences, companies must make an effort to speak to their audience in language that they understand.
