If you look at current Fortune 500 companies that were also in the first ever published list in 1955, the list is very small.  Even if you look at the list of the top 20 companies in the year 2000, and the top 20 list of companies today, there’s not a lot of overlap. Many of the giants of the past are no longer with us, or they have shrunk in stature. Names that were unknown 30, 40 years ago now dominate, as innovations happen, and new technologies emerge. The challenge businesses face is not whether to change, but how to engage with change. Change is inevitable — we either drive it or it is foisted on us. Building a culture that not only accepts change but embraces it as an opportunity for growth is important. Businesses weather the tough times by actively participating in shaping the change that is happening, creating an engaged team to work through the process, selecting a path forward together, and making the journey less about confronting challenges and more about seizing opportunities.  Let’s remember that, even as a species, one of our greatest strengths is our ability to adapt. After a brief hiatus from LinkedIn and other digital business platforms, I return with renewed insights and a refreshed strategic outlook—proof that stepping back can significantly enhance forward-thinking leadership. For executives, the relentless pursuit of innovation and operational excellence often becomes a blinder, limiting our vision to established tracks. Occasionally, we need to disengage from our routines to invite transformational thinking. This is not just about rest but about fostering the ability to see beyond the immediate operational needs to the larger strategic opportunities. Key Benefits of Gaining a Different Perspective: 1. Renewed Energy: Time away from constant digital connectivity recharges mental and emotional reserves, enhancing decision-making and leadership stamina. 2. McKinsey & Company have done a great job with this 30min presentation '8 CEO priorities for 2024'. Thorough, well researched etc. I recommend listening. But one line in it jarred: 'The best CEOs will do everything in their power to keep the best middle managers exactly where they are and reward them and focus them on coaching and connecting people to lift everyone'. Today’s CEOs are operating in a new landscape, with society and business becoming more intertwined and a broader group of stakeholders registering their expectations and demands. Today's leaders must take these 5 steps: 1. Know the players in your ecosystem in order to unite around a shared objective 2. Empower your senior leaders to be thought partners, surrogates, and successors who can hold their own with investors, board members, and employees 3. Cultivate an enterprise mindset and an ecosystem skillset that will enable you to act beyond your typical sphere of influence 4. Build the infrastructure of industry coalitions, public-private partnerships, and other organizations who can connect the ecosystem 5. Anticipate the risk that comes from navigating a messy set of social and political interests. While the risks are real, so is the potential for upside. #ecosystems #expectations #society #business

The CEO of 2025 I recently came across this fascinating article by Korn Ferry titled "Meet the CEO of 2025." which explores the six fundamentals that will differentiate future CEOs from their peers. It got me thinking about the evolving landscape of leadership and the essential qualities future CEOs will need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. One striking point that the article emphasized was the growing importance of qualities like empathy, caring, authenticity and the ability to connect not only with the mind but also with the heart. In an era where technology continues to reshape the business landscape, it's fascinating to see that human-centric qualities are becoming even more vital for effective leadership. However, not every executive or leader is naturally inclined to display these heart-centered behaviors. Some may have these qualities ingrained in their DNA, while others may need guidance and support to develop them. This is where tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Neethling Brain Instrument (NBI) play a crucial role. They provide valuable insights by confirming that individuals have inherent preferences, with some of these preferences naturally aligning with the traits future CEOs will find indispensable. As an Executive Coach, I've had the privilege of working with leaders who are determined to grow and develop, even when certain behavioral traits aren't naturally part of their preferences. Coaching offers a powerful pathway for personal and professional growth, enabling leaders to unlock their potential and cultivate the heart-centric qualities that the CEO of 2025 will demand. In my experience, it's not about changing who you are but enhancing the skills and qualities that will enable you to become the leader your organization needs in an evolving world. It's about developing your unique leadership style while staying authentic to yourself.
