The Founder’s Dilemma: Navigating the Journey As founders and entrepreneurs, we all dream of the day our disruptive idea takes off. However, with scale comes a whole new set of challenges. This is the “founder’s dilemma” - how to balance your original vision and need for control with the changing needs of a growing company. Here are a few key tensions founders face: - Bringing on outside leadership and investors means giving up equity and control in your company. But it also fuels growth. - At some point, you need to transition out of the CEO role. However, it's hard to step back when it's your baby. - With more voices at the table, you now have to manage and listen to a board of directors with outside priorities. - Growth requires tough choices like pivoting your business model or cutting beloved projects or teams. You can't be married to your early ideas. - As the company scales, you need to motivate and lead in new ways - you can't operate like a startup anymore. The founders who navigate these tensions most thoughtfully are often the most successful. They bring on resources and expertise without giving up their guiding vision. They empower others while still leading through change. If you’re facing the founder’s dilemma in your own company, remember that growth requires trade-offs. One thing I've noticed as a founder, is that there's an unspoken challenge that rarely takes center stage in conversations about entrepreneurship. It's not the quest for funding, nor is it the hunt for the perfect co-founder. It's something far more personal and pervasive. The ego. Let me explain. The ego is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it fuels us with the courage to pitch to investors, captivates our teams, and drives us forward with relentless motivation. It's the spark behind the "crazy ones" who believe they can change the world—and often do. Yet, this same ego can be our greatest adversary. It sets the stage for unrealistic expectations, fosters comparisons, and brews frustration. It's a constant battle, one that's tough and, frankly, not discussed enough. Being a founder is living a life of extremes. You're either on top of the world or buried beneath it, with little room for the middle ground. But is this just the nature of striving for "outsized returns"? Admitting the struggle seems almost like conceding defeat, which is why many founders refrain from being vulnerable. This dichotomy - the ego as both a catalyst for success and a potential downfall - is perhaps one of the major paradoxes founders face yet rarely discuss. And it begs the question: How can we balance this delicate scale? Answering that question might just be the most crucial step we take towards not just being better leaders, but happier and more fulfilled individuals in this entrepreneurial journey.

Founders often say to me, “They just don’t understand how important this is.” “They” = employees, and “this” = a meeting, initiative, project, etc. Usually (and unfortunately) the truth is that employees and team members do understand what needs to be understood *for them*. Coming to terms with that can be pretty frustrating. But founders who are running the company are usually missing something: the “important” thing is not really that important to an employee. Case in point: a founder asked me once why no one in the office was excited about the huge investment in the company that had just closed.  “They just don’t understand that this a huge step in the company’s growth.” But the founder hadn’t linked the investment to the affect it would have on the employees, nor had anything changed for any one of them. It took a couple of conversations to get my point across: the employees were acting rationally. Link the thing that you think is important to the function and personal goals of the employees. Without that in place, you’re better off pushing a rope than trying to convince someone what they should think. #founders #entrepreneur #leaders #startupfounders

Building a founding team is a crucial step in the success of a startup, and it's essential to choose co-founders carefully. How does one choose a co-founder? 1. Complementary Skillset and Respect for Work: Should I look for someone with skills that complement yours and whose work I have seen across the years and have admiration for? 2. Alignment in Professional Values: Should I look for someone with shared values to ensure alignment in professional ethics and to avoid conflicts in the long run? 3. Compatibility and Long-Term Relationship: Should I identify someone from a long-standing professional network? May help in understanding each other's professional and personal strengths and weaknesses? 4. Passion and Shared Vision: Should I look for someone who shares your passion for the project and has a similar vision for the company's future from the get-go? 5. Interview and Transition: Should straightaway hire externally and transition someone from employee to co-founders, after assessing their skills, cultural fit, and commitment? 6.
