This randomized, controlled clinical trial investigated the impact of an intensive, multimodal lifestyle intervention on the progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Fifty-one participants with MCI or early-stage AD were randomly assigned to an intervention group or a usual-care control group. The intervention included a whole foods, plant-based diet, moderate exercise, stress management techniques, and support groups. After 20 weeks, the intervention group showed significant improvements in cognitive function and function tests, including the Clinical Global Impression of Change (CGIC), Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB), and Clinical Dementia Rating Global (CDR-G), compared to the control group. The intervention group also showed significant changes in biomarkers, such as an increase in the plasma Aβ42/40 ratio, which is associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease. These findings suggest that comprehensive lifestyle changes may significantly improve cognition and function in individuals with MCI or early-stage AD. The results support the need for further research and larger clinical trials to explore the potential of lifestyle interventions in preventing and treating Alzheimer's disease. The comprehensive lifestyle changes in this study's intervention group included the following components: 1. Diet: Participants followed a whole foods, minimally processed plant-based (vegan) diet. The diet was low in harmful fats, refined carbohydrates, and sweeteners. It was approximately 14-18% of calories from total fat, 16-18% from protein, and 63-68% from mostly complex carbohydrates. The diet was designed to be nutritionally balanced and included fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, soy products, seeds, and nuts. Selected supplements were also provided, such as omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin B12, magnesium L-threonate, Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane), and a super bifido probiotic. 2. Exercise: Participants engaged in moderate aerobic exercise, such as walking, for at least 30 minutes per day, five days per week. They also performed mild strength training exercises at least three times per week. Exercise sessions were supervised by an exercise physiologist, both in person and virtually. 3. Stress Management: Participants practiced stress management techniques, including meditation, gentle yoga-based poses, stretching, progressive relaxation, breathing exercises, and imagery. They were encouraged to meditate for one hour per day, supervised by a certified stress management specialist. Additionally, participants had the option to use flashing-light glasses at a theta frequency of 7.83 Hz, along with soothing music, as an aid to meditation and insomnia.

Some people have successfully reversed Alzheimer's through lifestyle changes. Yes, you read that right. Globally, around 50 million people are currently living with dementia, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common cause. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 6 million people are living with Alzheimer's disease. These numbers are projected to increase as the population ages, with some forecasts suggesting that by 2050, the number of people worldwide living with dementia could reach 152 million. Until recently it was widely accepted that there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but treatments and interventions can help manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and slow down the progression of the disease in some cases. Through the groundbreaking work of Dean Ornish, M.D. there is proof and hope provided patients and their families are willing to make the mend in lifestyle and diet. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 60% of factors that affect a person's health and quality of life are related to lifestyle. Lifestyle factors include diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and substance use.

Indeed, treatable risk factors, first and foremost, include oxygenation, rehydration motor /cultural engagements, interaction with the environment, proper sleep cycles, age appropriate activities and engagement. As an evolutionary neuroscientist, it’s clear that so many aging health based paradigms emerge from understanding our evolutionary background. Some prescriptions, of course, help tremendously. Music is also physiologic-level medicine and there are many many treatable risk factors that help elders go above and beyond in escorting pinnacle health. Absolutely. These “treatable risk factors” that only present as “symptoms“ of Alzheimer’s, quickly disappear once identified/treated. These include sleep apnea, dehydration, drug interactions, living in chaotic environments (“allstatic load”), lack of cardiovascular engagement, lack of age-appropriate social engagement, lack of movement/activity, elder-cultural appropriate care and so very many treatable risk factors. Indeed, symptoms of treatable risk factors only present as dementia and /or Alzheimer’s in elderly - but are not true dementia. In anyone, any age, for that matter. This is a very slippery slope. As a cognitive behavioral neuroscientist, I have studied aging BrainHealth for 20+ years now. It’s about time we started taking the solution seriously, not panicking and blaming and jumping on naive or less-informed elderly who are easy victims for misdiagnoses. Not to mention (at length here) those tempted or who would take advantage of elderly, often with direct financial ties, inheritance and property interests to elders with healthy, robust estates - or elders perceived as an inconvenience to obvious caretenders (adult children, spouses). One of the (sometimes criminal-level) aspects of quick (often “family method” form) diagnoses is that once diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, an elder person loses all any and all control of their bank accounts, their property, their freedoms/independence, freedom of choice and pretty much all of their basic human rights. Where do these assets go? Often to the power of attorney, and most often the case, those who stand to inherit these valuable assets. Meanwhile, there are some deep dark corners of dementia diagnostics. I know one young man, whose best friend was a family doctor. That doctor naively diagnosed a very innocent, elderly person as a favor to his buddy. She was dead within the year due to this bogus diagnosis, invasion and destruction of her life. There was no Alzheimer’s. The young man (also legal estate executor) had a buddy/friend and willing naïve puppet doctor. This doctor had never met the patient, took all damning information from the estate executor and wrote a letter to the court, who labeled the poor, innocent elderly lady with dementia. I call it the “Anderson Syndrome”. This is where doctors misuse their authority to flippantly diagnose someone with dementia. It’s a horrible abuse of their position.
