Rabbi Dr Herbert C Dobrinsky is my grandfather. I had the privilege of going to high school on the Yeshiva University campus. His office was a block away. We would go to the dining room in the administration building for lunch twice a week. I would pick him up in his office and we would go up the elevator together. My grandfather was already a vice president at the University at that time and he was always on the phone with either the University president’s office or some big donor who considered him a true friend. All of 14-17 years old, I would walk into his office, and everything would stop. “My grandson just walked in to take me to lunch” he would say to whomever he was talking to. Off we would go. I don’t remember a time we made it to the elevator without somebody stopping him to thank him for something. As we sat in the cafeteria he would greet everyone by name as they walked in and he would give Mazal Tov wishes on a recent celebration or ask them detailed questions about recent events in their family. My Sabba (Hebrew for grandpa) was and still is a celebrity throughout that entire community. He has been Vice President for university affairs for as long as I can remember. This is not a post for metrics, but let’s just say he’s the best fundraiser I’ve ever ever met, because he’s never fundraising and he’s always fundraising. So much of my communal involvement and the way I conduct myself in the business world is modeled after him. We are excited to spend time with Sabba in his retirement and Im grateful to YU for recognizing all he has done for the insitution and its global family.
