🗣️Margaret Kelly and Rosemary Agnew share insights from Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman and Scottish Public Services Ombudsman work into ‘Reaching out to People Experiencing Vulnerability’ - both NIPSO and SPSO focused on identifying and breaking down the barriers that prevent underrepresented groups from accessing their services. 💡The article highlights the importance of accessibility and inclusion in access to justice within Ombudsman systems, where both Offices recognise that improving accessibility will take time and continue to seek areas for improvement to provide better support to those experiencing vulnerability. 🙌 Improving the support provided to vulnerable service users is a continuous journey, and requires the collaboration of many organisations. The OA supports the joint efforts of NIPSO and SPSO, and we hope that their work can inspire others to take similar steps to building a more inclusive and supportive society. 🔎 Click on the link to read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eGsvgdPq

As NAIDOC Week 2024 draws to a close, we hope that everyone was able to attend a local NAIDOC event to collectively and loudly celebrate the unyielding spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The 2024 theme: 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud' is a powerful call to action, to 'forge a future where the stories, traditions, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are cherished and celebrated' (NAIDOC Theme 2024). The recent Independent Review of the National Legal Assistance Partnership 2020-25 (NLAP Review) found that there are still many barriers to access to justice for First Nations peoples. Growing demand, funding constraints and workforce shortages are preventing engagement in decision-making activities. Yet, meaningful dialogue and genuine co-design are essential to achieving true justice and equality. YLA is committed to realising recommendation 5 of the NLAP Review, which says that national specialist CLCs (like Youth Law Australia), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, and Family Violence Prevention Legal Services, should develop and implement culturally appropriate civil law services in genuine partnership. YLA acknowledges that we can do better for and with First Nations young people, organisations and communities. We are fully committed to doing so. #NAIDOC #NAIDOCWeek2024 #BlakLoudProud #KeeptheFireBurning #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

I find land acknowledgements to be interesting, because often organizations and people think that stating briefly what Indigenous land they are on is all they need to do. However, a land acknowledgement is only a first step. It should lead to actions. The Restorative Justice Association of BC is involved in communities across British Columbia, including Indigenous communities. This is their land acknowledgement and when you look at their website and strategic plan, you can see the actions they are taking. "The Restorative Justice Association of BC (RJABC) aims to promote connection, collaboration, and unity among restorative and Indigenous justice programs and initiatives throughout the province of British Columbia. Restorative justice has been shaped by traditional ways of knowing and the practices of Indigenous nations in this province, which we recognize and humbly acknowledge as a colonially defined area of land that forcefully superseded the traditional territories and relationships of at least 198 Indigenous Nations. Despite passing its Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act in November 2019, BC still has a long way to go before reconciliation is achieved. RJABC is ever mindful that we continue to live and work in unceded territories, and is committed to respecting the autonomy, dignity, and rights of Indigenous peoples." Does your organization have a land acknowledgement? If yes, what actions has that recognition led to? #landacknowledgement #actions #restorativejustice #britishcolumbia https://rjabc.ca/
