We had a great time last week attending S&P Global's CERAWeek, thanks again Paul Markwell for the invite. Here are our main learnings from the discussions we had last week: 📈 Conducting frequent surveys for super & ultra emitters is important to reduce error bars of emission totals and detect the fat-tails in methane inventories ⏳ With the introduction of the EPA super-emitter programme and increasing emphasis on reductions, there is a strong need for operators to receive methane detections from providers as real-time as possible 🛰 Additionally to detecting emissions, it is becoming more and more important to also detect when there were NO emissions detectable above a certain threshold Beyond this it was great to meet and reconnect with a variety of policymakers, practitioners and operators at the conference, and hear about some the really exciting work going on in the field. If you missed our #blackcarbon webinar with Drew Hill, Jeff Blair, Daniel Mendoza, Sean Wihera, and Paolo Micalizzi last week, you can now access the recording on our website! The webinar highlighted the importance of measuring and regulating black carbon, a type of particulate matter produced through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biofuels, and biomass. Black carbon is known for its potent ability to absorb sunlight and convert it to heat, contributing significantly to climate change. The health implications of black carbon are equally alarming, with its particles being small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and ultimately premature death. We discussed the groundbreaking partnership between AethLabs and Clarity Movement Co., which has led to the development of a new Clarity Black Carbon Module built around Aethlabs' MA350. We discussed the technical specifications and capabilities of the Black Carbon Module — including how Clarity and AethLabs teamed up to create the first solar-powered, low-maintenance, research-grade black carbon measurement equipment available on the market. This ability to pinpoint the origins of black carbon emissions is crucial for developing targeted mitigation strategies and policies. Through various case studies and collaborations, the speakers illustrated how the integration of advanced measurement technologies with comprehensive data analysis can uncover new insights into the behavior and effects of black carbon, guiding effective interventions and public health initiatives.
