Change can be challenging, but it is often necessary. Embracing the role of a change agent is crucial for guiding our health centers toward survival and prosperity. I deeply appreciate the board members who embraced my vision and empowered me to implement necessary changes. These changes were daunting then, but they paved the way for remarkable successes. As the Chair of the Board, Terry was instrumental in our efforts. Together, we navigated our health center's separation from county government, executed a rebrand, and launched a new site. The lesson? At the Care Transformation Collaborative of Rhode Island Annual Conference this year, the focus of "Investing in #PrimaryCare & #HealthEquity" led me to present and bridge what is known about Psychological Safety through a Diversity Lens in Healthcare Teams. If one more #medicalcare #team or system walked away with a better understanding of how #highfunctioningteams in #healthcare can impact #psychologicalsafety from a #diversity lens, then I would call it a success. If hearing about the #intelligentfailures along the path of piloting how to measure, operationalize and meaningfully impact psychological safety from a diverse healthcare workforce and #leadership perspective helped bring one more person or system closer to taking the leap, then I would feel honored. Connecting the tremendous work of Amy Edmondson to the #valuebased healthcare settings focused on #populationhealth is critical to my mission and as one participant noted "brought us all to a new level of discomfort in a safe space". (Best compliment ever after presenting by the way!)

We are so proud to share that the South Florida Anchor Alliance has been featured in Activating Place-based Partnerships for Equitable Economic Development: A Playbook for Anchor Collaboratives.  According to David Zuckerman, President & Founder of the Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN), “When I started in this work more than a decade ago, the phrase anchor collaborative did not exist. The idea that individual anchor institutions should intentionally leverage all of their assets—including their hiring, purchasing, investing, real estate, and voice—in concerted partnership with their peers and the community to improve economic mobility and build community wealth was not part of the conversation. Fast forward to today, and this idea has taken root in cities across the country.” The South Florida Anchor Alliance, a collaboration of 20 of the largest organizations and municipalities in South Florida, is one such example of an anchor collaborative that is intentionally leveraging all of their assets to improve economic mobility. Health Foundation Chief Strategy Officer, Janisse Schoepp, contributed to the playbook and served as a reviewer. She shares, “The importance of this Playbook is that it highlights national models of anchor collaboratives and disseminates lessons learned for other groups thinking about establishing their own anchor collaborative in their community. To be highlighted as one of the models nationally is very exciting and important in advancing the understanding of an emerging and promising approach to addressing social determinants of health and creating healthier communities.”  We applaud the Healthcare Anchor Network for their work on the playbook and thank Janisse for her contributions to the effort. #SouthFloridaAnchorAlliance, #SFAARegionalMarketplace, #HealthFoundationSouthFlorida, #HealthcareAnchorNetwork

Flying over California and Oregon back home to Seattle, I can see the big picture. The mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, and urban areas take shape below. ✈️ In healthcare, we often get lost in the details and small, incremental changes and miss the big picture. If we map out our current system and see where the gaps are, we can implement solutions that address foundational inequities and challenges in access to care. I’m a big picture thinker. Last month's NFL Medical Summit was truly groundbreaking, showing us the power of teamwork and collaboration. Bringing together more than 400 experts from different fields to focus on player wellness and safety was a game-changer! It's a brilliant example of how integrating multiple disciplines can foster innovative solutions and improve health standards. It got me thinking – if the NFL Can do this, why can't we apply this same approach to tackle our broader health challenges? Imagine if western trained professionals, integrative specialists, holistic practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders came together like the NFL summit attendees did. We could share ideas, learn from each other, and work towards solutions that address the root causes of chronic health issues. The success of the summit reminds us that when we break down barriers and work together, amazing things can happen. As healthcare leaders, understanding generational differences is key to addressing the needs of our patients and staff. But it's not enough to just understand; we must also have the communication skills and knowledge to effectively address those needs. The first step towards effective communication is identifying the unique distributions within our own organizations.
