Day 1 Service Saturday✨ Title: "The Power of Service: Making a Difference, One Act at a Time" In a fast-paced world, service stands out as a beacon of hope—a simple yet profound way to make a positive impact. Whether it's lending a helping hand to a neighbor, volunteering at a local charity, or participating in a community clean-up, acts of service have the power to transform lives and strengthen communities. Service is more than just a gesture; it's a reflection of our shared humanity and our commitment to making the world a better place. By giving of ourselves to benefit others, we not only address pressing needs but also foster connections, build relationships, and create a sense of belonging within our communities. Moreover, service is a catalyst for personal growth and fulfillment. Through acts of service, we discover our strengths, develop new skills, and find purpose in making a positive difference in the lives of others. Whether it's through volunteering, mentoring, or advocating for a cause, service empowers us to become agents of change and to leave a lasting impact on the world around us. In essence, service is a simple yet powerful way to make a difference, one act at a time. As we embrace the spirit of service in our daily lives, let us remember that even the smallest gesture can have a ripple effect, spreading kindness, compassion, and hope to those in need. Together, let us harness the power of service to create a brighter, more inclusive, and more compassionate world for all.

How can we engage older people in volunteering? A 2019 report from the British Heart Foundation found that, across the charity sector, those aged over 55 are more likely to have not volunteered and rule out volunteering in the future, challenging the misconception that volunteering is for ‘lonely’ older people or those with time on their hands... So how do we recruit and encourage older volunteers? In a blog from 2020, our CEO Michelle Wright discussed this ever relevant topic. 💬 "By using innovative, inclusive approaches, older volunteers can maintain their contribution." Join us today as we focus on the inspiring community at Holiday Express. All December, we're listening to our team and highlighting organizations where they hold a special connection, and today's recommendation comes from consultant and accomplished trombonist Chris Holland. Chris pointed us toward Holiday Express, where they work "to deliver music, food, gifts, financial support and friendship to those with the greatest need for the gift of human kindness during the holiday season and throughout the year." The 30-year-old organization connects with over 30,000 people every year and offers live music, holiday activities, stockings full of goodies, and delicious meals. Their activations extend to communities everywhere, but with particular focus on "those with mental and physical challenges, veterans, individuals in addiction and recovery programs, the isolated, the poor, the homeless, and children with serious illnesses." "We get to bring a holiday to those who might not have one. It is seriously moving to see humans who otherwise might be stagnant come to life during our time there," shares Chris. "This is a charity you want to support. At their events, every attendee gets gifts catered to their needs, a hot meal from a local restaurant, and us playing plenty of Motown and rock-n-roll holiday tunes." Find out more about their programs and how to get involved at https://lnkd.in/eGWYTxR.

Executive Director at OMI Cultural Participation Project • Social Media Content Creator • Social Media Manager • Graphic Designer
Thank you to everyone who donated to our Giving Tuesday campaign yesterday! Connecting with other people that share similar passions, hobbies, professions or even problems can be incredibly empowering and motivating, and is always useful. If you want your community to become a powerful agent of change around a particular cause, or you want to connect important decision makers from different businesses or industries, getting together at community events could be the first step. Our role at the OMI Cultural Participation Project is to provide a space for healthy debate, knowledge sharing, new ideas and judgement-free self-expression. If we can do this from your donations, then our community will quickly attract other like-minded individuals or thinkers. If you want a community to grow organically, organize events that bring people together. We create a culture and atmosphere where individuals feel part of something bigger than themselves, because feeling included or invited can be extremely powerful. If our community members feel valued, they’ll naturally invite others to join, too. We are restoring, empowering, and serving in our neighborhood: this is your San Francisco District 11.

Attending a Charity Village webinar now on OHSA and AODA Compliance Responsibilities for Nonprofits by Donna Marshall, MA, RP. She shared a powerful quote that left an impression on me (non-verbatim): "When the flower is wilted, you fix the environment... not the flower." This reminds me of the importance of creating a supportive environment that nurtures growth and well-being. When we focus on creating a positive environment, we can help people thrive and reach their full potential. And by creating a supportive and inclusive environment, we can help people with disabilities overcome barriers, achieve their goals, thrive and be active members of the society. 💡
