The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced the details of an "outcomes-based agreement" pilot program for new sickle cell anemia treatments. It's an innovative approach to holding drug manufacturers accountable: If a drug does not meet a preset, measurable goal (such as lowering pain-related hospital episodes over time), the manufacturers will have to rebate some of the costs back to #CMS. CMS's handling of this type of program is new; generally, it's left up to the states involved in the pilot. They hope this switch will level drug performance standards across the country. #healthinsurance #Medicare

CALLING ALL RARE DISEASE ADVOCATES! The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services need to hear from you by *July 2nd, 2024* about how to make patient and healthcare provider input in the #drugprice #negotiation #program under the #inflationreductionact #IRA work better and be more impactful. #CMS released the next set of guidances for the #IRA drug price negotiation program last week. One of the positives: the agency continues to be committed to incorporating the patient perspective in the drug price negotiation program and is explicitly seeking feedback on format, process, and other opportunities to make the listening sessions work better, be more impactful, and be more inclusive and accessible to patients, caregivers, and providers. Hopefully this will allow #CMS to gain meaningful, robust, and fit-for-purpose input on issues such as unmet medical need and therapeutic alternative, that we know can have a substantive impact on the negotiated price. Today, Pfizer signed an important agreement with the US federal government that will make it easier for eligible patients to access our oral #COVID19 treatment, helps enable the U.S. to have a robust stockpile of this treatment for future use, and helps provide additional clarity on the commercial market for our #COVID19-related products, reducing future uncertainty. Under this agreement, by January 2024, our oral treatment will be offered through commercial channels, not just the emergency federal channels created and used by the US government during the pandemic. As a result, more pharmacies, clinics and other healthcare sites are expected to be able to stock this treatment, making it more accessible for eligible patients across the US. In addition, on behalf of the federal government, Pfizer will set up a patient assistance program for the uninsured and underinsured through 2028. Patients insured through federal programs such as Medicare and Medicaid will continue to receive treatment free of charge in 2024. To learn more, please watch this video: https://lnkd.in/e2qnJE6F
