India's largest Edtech unicorn - once anyway, is worth too much trouble to track according to Blackrock. Two years ago when Zilingo fallout was all the rage, a secret squirrel told me that it was nothing next to the upcoming shit show that was to be Byju. "BlackRock’s disclosure for the period ending March this year follows a rough year for the Bengaluru-based startup, which was India’s most valuable startup not long ago. Byju’s struggled to meet its financial reporting deadlines last year, ultimately falling short of its revenue projections by more than 50% as it faced various governance issues." Byju is just a badly managed company, it made some terrible decisions; and then doubled down in the worst possible way (they got funding from vultures). And now the shit show is coming to a conclusion.

Amid the shift in the #funding dynamics away from the growth-at-any-cost model for #startups, 2023 saw as many as nine Indian #unicorns losing 49 per cent value on average, according to a report by early-stage #venturecapital firm Orios Venture Partners. The pack was led by beleaguered #edtech startup BYJU'S with a whopping 86 per cent markdown in its #valuation from $22 billion. “2023 saw a transformation in the Indian startup ecosystem, bringing a sharp focus on the fundamental purpose of business building. This meant that being ‘well-governed and valuable’ rather than ‘valuation’ became a cornerstone for founders and investors,” Ruparel added. Here are some other key highlights from the report:  🔶 Mega deals during the year fell to 23 deals – a 61.66% decline from the 60 mega deals in 2022. 🔶 The median ticket size reached its lowest level since 2019 to $2.2 Mn from $4 Mn in 2019. 🔶 Funding in women-led startups tanked 80% to $480 Mn from $2.4 Bn in 2022. 🔶 Investors slashed the valuations of 8 unicorns, including BYJU’S, Meesho and PharmEasy. 🔶 Seed stage startups could raise only $681 Mn versus $2.4 Bn raised in 2022, representing a 72% YoY decline. The number of deals, too, slipped 36.6% to 467 from 737 in 2022. 🔶 Late and growth stage funding figures did not prove to be any consolation either, declining 60% YoY in 2023 to $2.9 Bn and $5.6 Bn, respectively.

How do VCs and private equity do valuation? I don't get it. Once worth $22 billion, Byju’s is not worth a penny now, according to HSBC. The bank also says a few of other startups are not nearly as valuable as they once were. "HSBC estimated that online pharmacy Pharmeasy should be valued at $2.8 billion (down from a high of $5.6 billion in 2021), social commerce Meesho at $2.5 billion (down from $4.9 billion), and former logistics unicorn ElasticRun at $800 million." Prosus zeroes out its 9.6% stake in Byju’s Prosus, one of Byju’s largest investors, on Monday said its once-$2.1 billion worth stake in the Indian edtech startup is now worth nothing, but it is still hopeful that the formerly most-valuable Indian startup can be salvaged. The largest external investor in Byju’s with a 9.6% stake, Prosus said in its quarterly report that its stake in the startup is now worth zero “due to the significant decrease in value for equity investors.” Prosus Group CIO, Ervin Tu, said on an earnings call that the firm is still hopeful about Byju’s outlook, but improving governance at the Indian firm will be key. The Indian edtech giant has had a difficult couple of years as it grappled with a series of financial and governance setbacks that have tarnished its reputation and imperiled its future.
