Today is Safer Internet Day - a day and movement very close to my heart, when we all look toward a safer and better internet for all, and especially for children and young people. A lot of us on here are parents, and one of the toughest parts of seeing our kids growing up is seeing them live through what must be one of the most toxic and dangerous periods in the history of social media and online activity. 📋 Recent research by Internet Matters found 86% of parents with under 11s have used at least one parental control setting, whilst 72% of parents with 15-16 year olds have. This still leaves around 1 in 5 completely unprotected. More worryingly, reporting by sites like Meta and Snapchat show extremely low levels of uptake of their parental controls. Whilst I'm hopeful that moves like the Online Safety Bill will result in more platform responsibility, we as parents have to do what we can to keep our kids safe, while doing what we can to let them enjoy the world. It's a tricky balance that each family will have to strike - but worth doing so. Platforms are now making that easier to handle through tools, so take a few minutes this week to check what access your family has to, and if there's anything you'd like to implement to make things safer for everyone. ----------------------------- Some hopefully helpful links! ----------------------------- Meta Family Centre, with links to 📸 Instagram & 🗨 Messenger settings https://lnkd.in/exJRKz8v 👻 Snapchat tools for parents: https://lnkd.in/e5tZ_fmp 📺 Setting YouTube content levels: https://lnkd.in/eBBGX6Uz 📶 Got a Deco Mesh router? The lifetime value of a 13 y/o teen is roughly $270 according to an internal company e-mail at Meta. The shirts these youth activists wore at yesterday's senate hearing in the US refer to an ongoing lawsuit by 41 states against Meta, claiming its products are addictive for teens. After several testimonies from Meta and TikTok in recent past, this really feels like a pivotal moment where social media companies are actually being held responsible for their actions. We are proud to support - in any way we can - the important work being done by organisations like Design It For Us #HALFTHESTORY Center for Humane Technology, advocating to keep big tech accountable and strive for more humane practices. "Show me the incentives, and I'll show you the outcome" Charlie Munger famously stated. The incentive? $270 profit. The outcome? probably dramatic. A study in 2019 found that adolescents spending over 3h on social media daily "faced double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes, including symptoms of depression and anxiety." Meanwhile a recent survey by Gallup indicates over 50% of 13-year olds are spending an average of 4.8h on social media everyday. And mind you, these numbers are likely to be understated since they are self-reported. Actual screentime figures are probably higher than self-reported as was clear in the recent screentime report published by leading screentime app Opal Sources: - https://lnkd.in/e25ej_TE - https://lnkd.in/exzbX3Kk https://lnkd.in/erQSt3nA - https://lnkd.in/ejiRsdTx
