Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸 Before gathering to enjoy your lakeside BBQs and evening fireworks, it’s worth spending a few minutes remembering and considering the daring boldness with which British colonists risked their lives to become American revolutionaries, and what inspired them to create the world’s longest-lasting constitutional republic, a brilliant form of government conceived by her founders to ensure unalienable rights for her citizens. Since the 1620s, Americans expanded across the continent with a sense of rugged idealism and purpose, ensuring survival from colonial Europe; overcame the ugly sin of slavery by giving 600,000 American souls for freedom; led the modern Age of Enlightenment with a system to encourage risk taking and free enterprise, resulting in the building blocks of our modern society, from the telephone to the airplane; joined with Allied nations to rescue the world from fascism in World War II; and defeated Marxism-Leninism abroad in the 20th century. Now America leads the technological revolution fueling the future of business, travel, communications, healthcare — the full 360 of American life. We have much to be proud of and thankful for as our nation prepares to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

We live in an era of great confusion and disappointment with governance and a general dissatisfaction in our representation in OUR government. Allow me share some memorable advice my granma used to share to me- "things seem to always get worse before they get better", or even more shared, "It's always darkest right before dawn". The idea of "America" was that of a "great experiment", at a time where entire nations were either ruLED by a monarchy or were empires were RULED by emperors, a group of enlightened people conceptualized the idea of a nation ruled by the people. They even postulated a number of scenarios in that! Some were unrealistic, some were marginally laughable. But the concept was so appealing, men were willing to die for it. In the decades around what we today know as America's "Independence Day", this nation developed a principle that would be used over and over in many other lands on this planet. Back to today- I try to remember the advice from my granma when I understand that the experiment is still running, because the settings were never potted in epoxy- Lest we forget that those enlightened people considered that times would change, society would change and thus governance should be able to change to support that change. I won't waste your time talking about the things we should have learned in our civics classes in school, but consider those now... As we celebrate our Independence, let us also remember that the cost of FREEDOM is NEVER FREE- When we are a military protecting the homeland from external influences that would compromise the autonomy of our nation's governance or it's people's freedoms, OR safety. Or, a citizen that understands that we are not expected to leave the governance of our country to someone else, but that a government "Of, WE the People" means that what we have is the product of our contributions, or lack there of... Make America what you expect it to be, make YOUR contributions to it- participate in the government of it, scrutinize the abilities and effectiveness of those you choose to represent you in government, consider what happens to the governance as that representative exploits your representation- we are NOT choosing leaders here folks- we are CHOOSING those that REPRESENT our expectations in the governance of this "Nation built on the GREAT EXPERIMENT... Happy 4th of July- Let Freedom Ring!

On July 4th we celebrate the courage of those men and women who embraced the idea of freedom and indepedence and sacrificed much to earn it. It took over seven years from the time the Declaration of Independence was signed until the day the British surrendered, but those in the halls of Congress, and those who rallied behind such a powerful ideal didn't know how long the task would last. Today we are honored and inspired by those same "self- evident" truths to continue building a more perfect Union, no matter how long the task will take. On this Independence Day, let us remember the immense sacrifices made by those who gave their lives in the American Revolutionary War. Their courage and determination laid the foundation for the freedoms we cherish today. Our founders envisioned a nation built on liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness, and they worked tirelessly to make that dream a reality. Throughout history, these ideals have been preserved through great sacrifice. The American Civil War, with its immense cost, reaffirmed our commitment to unity and equality. Yet today, we must acknowledge that we have lost our way. Our basic morality seems to be eroding, and we have lost sight of what is truly important. Virtue has been corrupted, and there appears to be a subversive force weakening our nation from within. If we are not careful, we risk losing everything that has been fought for. But amid these challenges, there is hope. America remains a shining beacon because of what we can be. We have the power to rediscover our values, to uphold the principles that make us strong, and to strive towards a future that honors the sacrifices of the past. Let us come together, united in purpose, to ensure that the light of freedom continues to shine brightly for generations to come. Happy Independence Day, and may God bless America.
