Kaufman Hall is proud to honor and celebrate Juneteenth by educating our colleagues on its history, impact, and significance. Recently, the Black ERG hosted two events to commemorate Juneteenth and celebrate Black history and culture. The first event was a virtual cooking class led by our own, Laura Moore, where participants learned the history behind the main dish, Mac & Cheese, and engaged in discussions about Juneteenth in a collaborative environment. The second event was a luncheon, with catering from a Black-owned restaurant in Chicago, Cleo's Southern Cuisine. This luncheon allowed colleagues to gather, spend time together, and delve deeper into the facts and significance of Juneteenth. February is Black History Month, a celebration of cultural contributions, diversity and the bountiful food and traditions that African Americans have contributed. Starting in 1976, this month recognizes and celebrates the Black voices that have played pivotal roles in shaping our shared history. According to refed.org, a “remarkable thing about this food history is how it sprang from enterprise, creativity, survival, and necessity. Innovation in Black food culture came from scarcity and being unjustly forced into hardship and food insecurity. Creating recipes using scraps, leftovers, and ingredients that were otherwise deemed as ‘less than,’ African American culture set the standard for creating delicious and wholesome meals from very little, and they are meals that we still enjoy today. From cornbread to gumbo, mac and cheese to fried chicken, it is a culinary legacy that is deeply ingrained in the American cultural profile." As we celebrate Black history, we continuously work to embrace diversity, equity and inclusion in our nutrition and health research endeavors. Recognizing and honoring diverse perspectives is key to creating meaningful impacts in our areas of focus. #BlackHistoryMonth

In our final spotlight in celebration of this year’s Black History Month, we’re highlighting a leader who has spent his career in the food and service industry: Charmers Redd. When asked what Charmers loves about the food & beverage business, the answer was simple: the people. He believes we are in the people business, serving food — not the other way around. Keeping that in mind, it’s extremely important to form genuine connections and foster environments where people feel valued and understood. For anyone looking to enter the F&B industry, Charmers’ advice is this: “Prioritize empathy and understanding. Recognize that every interaction is an opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's day. Treat each person with respect, kindness, and attentiveness. Also, never underestimate the power of relationships. Networking within the industry can open doors to new opportunities and provide invaluable support and guidance along your journey. Remember, in our industry, people are at the forefront of everything we do. By putting people first and fostering meaningful connections, you'll not only succeed in your career but also contribute to the heart and soul of our business.”

The ELC is proud to celebrate #BlackBusinessMonth! The importance of Black businesses are critical to our families & communities and to the overall success of our economy. Black Business Month was created in 2004 when historian John William Templeton and engineer Fredrick E. Jordan partnered to advance the policies affecting 2.6 million African American businesses and develop greater economic freedom for Black communities. Since the late 1700’s, Black businesses have made critical contributions to America’s economy such as barbershops, tobacco shops, shoemaking shops, and other small businesses. The “golden age” of 1900-1930 was a time period when Black businesses began to boom, stemming from Jim Crow Laws segregating African Americans. The ELC’s purpose is to open channels of opportunity for Black executives to positively impact business and society. Join us through the month of August as we highlight and celebrate #BlackBusinesses and #BlackEntrepreneurs all month long! 🤎 #BlackOwnedBusiness #BlackCEOs #BlackWomenLead #BlackMenLead #BlackProsperity

In celebrating Black History Month, NorthBay Health invited a number of our Excellent Black leaders to share thoughts on a variety of topics. Today meet Kerry Harris, Nutrition Services Production & Retail Manager who answers the question: How do you see your role impacting diversity and inclusion in our workplace? I feel that fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace stands as a cornerstone of effective leadership. As a manager, I recognize the paramount importance of cultivating an environment where every team member feels not just welcomed, but empowered to contribute meaningfully. Championing diversity, equity, and inclusion enables us not only to broaden our perspectives but also to encourage others to embrace and celebrate our differences. As a leader I feel that it's my responsibility to actively foster an inclusive workplace culture wherein every employee feels valued and respected. Promoting open communication, actively listening to diverse viewpoints, and leveraging our unique differences offer us opportunities for mutual learning and growth. Ultimately, I strive to build teams that harness the power of diversity to optimize our collective effectiveness. I also believe that the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and its sub-committee at NorthBay are playing a crucial role in highlighting the history and unique attributes of various cultures, enabling others to engage and educate themselves.
