Excited to announce the publication of this paper with Kean Birch and Guilherme Cavalcante Silva!! We consider the strategies Google uses to valorize personal data. We qualitatively analyzed financial materials to identify the different modes of access and use restrictions that Google deploys to turn digital data into a valuable asset. We conclude that, despite being highly ambiguous, Google’s approach to data value focuses on monetizing users themselves, not data. https://lnkd.in/e2wv4J9f

The Government Digital and Data (previously DDaT) profession has been around for a while. In that time there's been a proliferation of products and services (including standards and guidance) that contain good practice in digital service transformation. Here in the Central Digital and Data office we own a lot of it. Now we're asking ourselves, is it still right? How do we know if something is good practice, and where does good practice come from? What if it was better joined up and easier to use for other government organisations? In this blog post Ben Carpenter and I explain how our team are discovering and assessing this complex landscape, the importance of communities, and what it'll take to maintain things in future. https://lnkd.in/e9-NUNze

Interesting article by the BBC on #data, #privacy, Inrupt, and Athumi. Decentralized data storage and sharing under user control, as provided by Solid Pods, may be important for a future #web3 (or 3.0, or 6.0 according to Tim Berners-Lee). But it needs an organized #ecosystem, in which data is provided and consumed cross-industry, linking organizations to persons. Decentralization without organization will not release enough power and stamina and will lead to islands of incompatible solutions. https://lnkd.in/dkdDmdvZ
