#WorldFoodSafetyDay 2024 WHO reports that one in ten people worldwide fall ill from contaminated food each year. Over 200 diseases are caused by eating contaminated food. 40 percent of the foodborne disease burden is carried by children under 5. Access to enough nutritious food is essential for a happy and healthy life. Unfortunately, contaminated food can lead to numerous foodborne illnesses. Food safety is the key to preventing this. It encompasses all practices – from storage and preparation to consumption and delivery – that ensure food retains its nutritional value and doesn't pose a health risk. By preventing harmful bacteria growth, food safety safeguards our well-being. The World Health Organization estimates foodborne illnesses cause roughly 420,000 deaths annually. That's why World Food Safety Day, celebrated on June 7th, emphasizes the importance of maintaining high food standards. By prioritizing food safety, we can all contribute to a healthier future.

Access to safe food is a basic right of individuals everywhere. Food safety is critical for food and nutritional security. Unsafe food reduces the bioavailability of nutrients in food and increases malnutrition in populations already at high risk. The Food Trade Coalition for Africa, in collaboration with the Standards and Trade Development Facility have co-authored a Policy Brief, “Driving Safe Food Trade in the Midst of a Food Crisis in Africa. A Critical Step for the Success of the AfCFTA”. The Policy Brief has been published on the Coalition website. To disseminate it to a wider audience, the Coalition and STDF has co-organize a Learning Event to engage key stakeholders in food safety, food trade and food security.
Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Driving Safe Food Trade in Africa. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

World Food Safety Day 2024 launch The 2024 joint FAO and WHO World Food Safety Day campaign has been launched today, and the year’s theme has been revealed as: Food safety - prepare for the unexpected. More here: https://lnkd.in/dzcQ2aPC The campaign will explore issues around unexpected food safety incidents that can occur even when we have all played our part to keep food safe. Such incidents can be as simple as a power outage at home and the subsequent challenges in storing food safely. On the other end of the scale, international food safety alerts involve contamination or potential contamination within the food supply, the origins of which have to be identified as quickly as possible to avert an outbreak of illness. In such situations, data collection and rapid information exchange across borders and sectors help to prevent the spread of foodborne disease. #foodsafety
