How can the bread you eat support your gut health? Sourdough bread is often recommended for people with digestive issues because it is easier to digest than commercial bread made with baker’s yeast. This is due to the longer fermentation process in making sourdough, which breaks down the gluten and phytic acid in the bread. Unfortunately, many of the sourdough breads found in supermarkets are not true sourdough and contain additives and preservatives that can damage the gut. Some manufacturers add vinegar to give the bread a sour taste rather than letting it come naturally from the fermentation process. So be sure to check the ingredients and see if a sourdough starter has been used. Even better, please find a local bakery that can show you their starter. Or how about making your own? These little sweet warriors give stevia its delightful flavor. But rewind to pre-2008: the FDA labeled stevia as an “unsafe food additive” and restricted its use as a sweetener. During consultations, we've seen the frustration on people's faces when they realize they've been duped by slick marketing tactics. It's like trying to solve a food puzzle, except the pieces never quite fit together. Many packaged foods that claim to be healthy are actually loaded with sneaky sugars and unpronounceable additives. For example, granola bars, flavoured yogurts, most breakfast cereals (especially those marketed to kids), frozen dinners, sports drinks, pre-packaged microwave popcorn, and pre-packaged smoothie packs all contain unhealthy ingredients. This April Fools' Day, let's demand transparency, truth in advertising, and products that actually live up to their promises. Trust your gut! When it comes to CPG founders, I read this messaging on LinkedIn all the time. I have never felt more confident in my gut. That’s why I retired from my medical practice.
