According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an average of 21.5 million people per year since 2008 have been displaced globally from climate-related hazards like floods, storms, wildfires, and extreme temperatures. That means that there are more than 320 million climate refugees who have left their homes already. And the issue does not appear to be slowing down. In recent years, with the onset of climate change, climate refugees have emerged as a critically vulnerable group and are forced to deal with large-scale displacement as well as loss of land, livelihoods, and lives. As a multidimensional crisis, the issue of climate refugees needs holistic and collective action, right from integrating a climate lens in disaster preparedness to reducing the risks of climate disasters through robust action plans. #ClimateChange #ClimateRefugees #ClimateCrisis #EnvironmentalJustice #DisasterPreparedness #SustainableFuture

What does climate change have to do with immigration? 🌏 The Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) predicts that around 1.2 billion people could be displaced by 2050 due to natural disasters and climate change. For more than 85 years, Global Refuge has assisted forcibly uprooted people from around the globe. But now more than ever, we are seeing an unprotected group seeking refuge: people who are displaced, in whole or in part, due to climate disasters. This #EarthDay, we're calling attention to this unprecedented crisis, which is on track to become one of the largest drivers of displacement in the 21st century. Every day, our staff meet refugees and immigrants who have been impacted by drought, extreme weather, wildfires, and other natural disasters—often compounding conflict, violence, and persecution in their home countries.
