The consistent message echoed in all the presentations “Vine to Mind” conference on artificial intelligence hosted earlier this month by the Harvard Data Science Review (HDSR) was, “AI is here to help you make better decisions, whether you are a multi-billion dollar global wine company or a small family winery with a tasting room – in fact, both are probably already using some form of AI in your operations.” “The challenge is that not everyone will know how to engage with the technology,” said one of the conference organisers, Donald St. Pierre, cofounder and chairman of AdaptEdge. “Additionally, the term artificial intelligence or ‘AI’ will scare some people off.” “One of the challenges the conference wanted the conference to address was how do research and industry connect with each other?” added Xiao-Li Meng, founding editor-in-chief of the HDSR, now celebrating its fifth anniversary of publication. The article shocked me for two reasons. The shape. We cannot say that the tone is politically correct and Paul Mabray speaks his mind. Even sharper when talking about small wine comoamies, which makes the article even more irreverent. Whether you agree or not with what he says anout wine industry. The bottom. I cannot deny his reason when he insists that the industry must embrace digital. It remains a paradox that we have incorporated technology massively into our personal lives and we resist doing so in business. However, I miss keys on how to do it. There is a lack of practical approach to the issue and, in the end, such a valid reflection remains just that. In a reflection that is difficult to give real shape. https://lnkd.in/dVkbCjpd

Do you know how many different wines a distributor usually carries? As a rule of thumb, smaller distributors might carry between 100 and 500 different wines, while larger distributors could offer several thousand options (in the US, Breakthru lists 13,500 products). I want to focus on smaller distributors here. 100 to 500 different wines are already a lot to manage for a small team. Especially when you consider that most of the team is focused on sales. It leaves only a couple of people to take care of administration and marketing. In reality, it’s usually the same person who does both (if you’re that person, you know what I’m talking about). One single person to manage hundreds of wines, hundreds of tech sheets, hundreds of shelf talkers. Now, multiply that by vintages. 🤯 It is a daunting task. This is the reason why tech sheets (and marketing in general) are placed on the back burner in this industry.
