Working in an international environment is an opportunity to meet people from other cultural backgrounds. Working with the language is not only about being able to speak a foreign language, but also about having a deeper understanding of the habits, mentality or situations that exist in a given nationality. The working culture in each country differs, although there are similarities. On German work culture in the video below. However, it is important to take note that things are not always as they say, but by learning about interculturalism, you can then observe in practice what works and what is no longer valid. Last summer on the way back from an Albania trip I had a short layover in Warsaw. When I boarded the plane home, I sat next to a really nice chasidish gentleman . We got to talking, and I shared with him what I do. By the end of the flight we had exchanged numbers and he said he may have a need for overseas employees and he’d let me know. It took about a year of following up with him weekly before he was finally ready to pull the trigger. Finally a few weeks ago he did. He hired an employee from our Kosovo office and he couldn’t be happier. I learned from this two things. 1. Always be ready to sell your product, you never know where you’ll meet someone who can use you. 2. Follow up follow up follow up. If you know the lead has a need, don’t be afraid to continuously follow up. If their not interested they’ll let you know, but as long as they say their interested and want their product, keep following up. #Networking #BusinessLessons #Persistence #Opportunities #cheaperteam #offshoring

✈ “Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking.” ✈ Not the most encouraging words to hear on an international flight, especially when delivered by the pilot, as you are waiting to board! On my recent trip to South Africa, this is exactly how our pilot introduced himself to a gate full of waiting passengers, BUT thankfully he did caveat it with “except in this instance”. He shared with us that our upcoming flight was to be his last. Tonight marked his retirement AND his birthday. Instantly, the crowd burst into applause. Without prompting, we joined in singing Happy Birthday. We also applauded as one, when 18 hours later, he executed a flawless landing! As I made the journey to Johannesburg, I found myself thinking about: 💠 #gratitude: This man, separated from his family for extended periods, had spent 20+ years of his career, literally holding the lives and safety of hundreds of souls in his hands every time he did his job. This man deserved every round of applause as do the countless others whose work may be in the background, but who care for us in more ways than we know (e.g. #servicemembers; #veterans; #firstresponders; #healthcareheroes) 💠 #humanity: What I felt in the moment, was something I can only call “a deep sense of humanity”. Over 100 strangers connected wordlessly with one another, to share in the success of a perfect stranger. With the divisiveness in the world today, this moment gave me hope. 💠 As it relates to #work: In the course of our daily workday, it’s easy to overlook and take certain things for granted. This experience reminded me to: 🔹 Express appreciation to those who might be less visible, but integrally important and critical to the mission. 🔹 Exult, visibly, loudly, and frequently, in the accomplishments and achievements of others. 🔹 Intentionally seek to create bonds and connections that support colleagues, customers, and service providers. What thoughts would you add?

This is the part they didn't tell you about moving to the #Nordics. "Slask"; "Slud"; "Loska" - also known as "Slush". It's when beautiful, white snow turns into a liquid gray/ brown mud. For some, it may cause an existential crisis. It looks bad, it feels bad - let's unite and hate it together. How do you deal with it? Do you have a name for it where you come from? #KEYRelocation #destinationservices #visaandimmigrationservices #Nordics

How to have a successful one-hour team building experience. See below!
I always talk about the value of in-person connection, but rarely do I get the opportunity to spend an hour uninterrupted and without a busy agenda to get to know a group of people I have just met – until last week! We had an audience with the Hungarian ambassador to the EU, and after the meeting, our team got stuck on the lift ride down. Luckily one of the passengers had the mobile number of the ambassador, who was able to see us safely back to ground. Although it was worth spending that time on relationship building – next time I’ll get some extra exercise and take the stairs!
