I received a lot of DMs yesterday inquiring about advice for those stepping into the role of "the first SE." Here are some key tips I'd like to share: 1. Define the vision. Take the time to write down your vision for the SE department. ---> Write it down! Hopefully if all goes well, you'll be expanding the team in the future. Having a clear vision from the start - it will help guide growth. 2. You set the tone. ---> You have the opportunity to establish the tone for how AEs and other cross-functional team members will engage and work with the SE team. Your actions and approach will shape these interactions. 3. It's not just "you". It's the "department." ---> While you may currently be the sole member of the department, avoid viewing it "just you." Keep the bigger picture in mind, recognizing your departments contribution to the organization's goals. 4. Document early. Document often. Actually, just DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! ---> Create and document SOPs, best practices, workflows etc, from the start. This early documentation is key. It will not only ensures a smooth transition for future team members but it is also the foundation for the department's growth and stability. "The First" is a unique opportunity to shape and lead. Hopefully these tips will help tackle this massive task with a little more ease.
