Five points I took from Tanni Grey-Thompson at the launch of Cymru Women's Sport in Cardiff earlier this month - particularly in regard to women's sport and EDI! 1 Remember the past and don't forget where we've come from - AND how recently! Women’s football was banned in England as recently as 1970! 2 Statistics show that teenage girls often drop out of sport - we need to find better ways to engage them (and keep them)! In my mind, that's around kit, safeguarding, periods, safe spaces, sport for fun, not just competition and lots more - we have work to do! 3 We have some great figureheads and role models - but what do the pipeline and mid-levels look like - and how are we championing them? 4 Transport! The cost of living is impacting transport costs. Training facilities may be quite a distance away so cycling/walking not an option. And who wants to walk out alone at the end of a session into a poorly-lit car park? 5 Investment and inclusion in women's sport - and getting (not "reaching") out to communities that are harder to engage. How’s this for an innovative approach to building new homes? In Kent, they’ve added modular homes to the roof of an existing apartment block - creating new living spaces without the need for more physical footprint (at least at ground level). https://lnkd.in/gSPCDXWq This is a great example of thinking a little bit differently and using new advances in construction to solve an age-old problem. It is the type of solution that councils and local government organisations across the country should be looking at to alleviate the homelessness problems that seem to be in the news every day. I’d love to see more of this kind of construction, particularly here in the North West. What are your thoughts? Another important step in the redevelopment of the WACA.

In June, 1980, I authored an article in the Norwegian daily " Dagbladet" titled "Norwegian Sports and the developing countries". Within the concept of "A new international Sports order" I outlined several challenges that the Norwegian sports community were facing vis a vis the global South. They were all subsequently presented to the newly elected president of the Norwegian Fotball Federation(NFF) Eldar Hansen. He struck the idea on full volley and The Norwegian Agency of International Development - where I was then employed -with the NFF in September the same year organized in Trondheim a workshop outlining several specific approaches for a follow up. The Chairman of the Norwegian Sports Association Ole J. Bangstad wholeheartedly supported a planning process that led to the inauguratoon of the first Norwegian initiated "Sports for development" programme in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1984. The initiative has been followed up through a multitude of programmes, projects and events - the annual Norway Cup is to be specifically mentioned - by Norwegian sports associations, clubs, groups and individuals. An estimated amount of NOK 1 billion has been provided in total by Norwegian aid authorities. Fourty years later - last month - I had published on the web side of NORAD's "Panorama" an essay where I called for an impact evaluation of these unique efforts. With the prime purpose to sum up experiences and learn from the whole endeavour. Not necessarily in order to control. A main perspective would be if it has resulted in an improvement in the welfare and health situation of children and youth - in particular the female part. Have the social structures and activities of partnering national and local organisations been strengthened. Has racism in Norwegian Sports been reduced by these efforts? 15th -19th August 2023: Eldoret Sports Club, Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County. Many innovations and open government reforms are happening at the local level. #OGPLocal has helped in building partnerships between local governments and Civil Society to make their governments more open, accountable and responsive to citizens. Together with #OGPLocal counties (Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet) and our partner Twaweza East Africa, I participated in the 1st Biennial Devolution Conference and interacted with Non-OGP Local counties, sensitizing them on the OGP Local milestones and/Success Stories over the years including the OGP ideals and Principles and how they can leverage the partnership for enhanced open, inclusive, accountable and responsive governance. Over the last nine years, the Council of Governors in conjunction with the Senate, the National Government and the County Governments, have hosted annual devolution conferences in various parts of the country. The Devolution conferences are geared towards assessing the progress of devolution, identify challenges faced by the county governments, share best practices, and provide a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas and solutions. This years theme was “10 Years of Devolution: The present and the Future”, and the Sub- theme, “Driving Transformation from the Local Level: County Governments as the Center of Economic Development" This theme came at a better time in the context of the New OGP Strategy where Local offers scale and sustainability to achieve OGP’s mission of growing a bigger, stronger and more interconnected movement of reformers and champions taking action together to have real impact. It is at the local level where the promise of collaboration between government, civil society, and the people leads to strengthened democracy and where better societal outcomes can be most meaningfully fulfilled. Last years annual survey was a massive success. Not only because we received really rich data, allowing us to create 5 goals to work towards across the year, but importantly we worked more closely with our Local Authority partners in Sport, Activity and Movement. 👍🏽With their input, we shaped the 2022/23 survey to meet all our needs, enabling their input to co-own it. 👍🏽We have met regularly to focus on the 5 goals, achieving more as a group rather than separately 👍🏽As a result they have felt a stronger link to the feedback and have been able to use the results to shape their development plans and support. 👍🏽Designing this years survey with this foundation means we are in a stronger position again.
