There is an exponential rise in elbow UCL surgery (Tommy John surgery). There are many factors for this, one of which is earlier specialization in baseball and other throwing sports. The UCL repair with internal brace is an amazing surgery with few re-ruptures and has been a workhorse in my throwing athlete practice. While its low, re-tears do occur and when this does the old techniques requiring bone tunnels are not possible. My recently developed UCL reconstruction technique using Arthrex Forktip and Regular swivelocks has been phenomenal when this situation occurs. I’m been shocked with how good the results are with this new technique for both revision and primary UCL reconstruction. I present to you a short video clip from a high level player who failed their repair from an outside facility at 2 years out we revised this to a UCL reconstruction with palmaris autograft in under 45 minutes. The hardest part of this case with finding his ulnar nerve since he had a previous transposition (special thanks to my partner Dr. Wayne Weil!).  These cases require a team approach regardless of technique and evaluation of previous tunnels, but when you execute in a safe and efficient fashion its awesome! To see my full technique and learn about this surgery see my website link below. At Orthopedic Specialists of Seattle we offer our high level baseball players most cutting edge techniques to get them back on the field. Tommy John Surgery, named after the legendary pitcher Tommy John, revolutionized sports medicine 50 years ago. Frank Jobe, MD, pioneered this groundbreaking procedure in 1974, and ever since countless athletes' careers have been transformed. What is PCL Reconstruction? The warm weather sports of baseball and soccer have a high incidence of knee injury to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Preseason training for football and basketball also contribute to a higher number of PCL injuries. A PCL injury can occur during high energy contact with another player on the soccer field, with a hard landing when overtaking the next base in baseball, or a similar high-impact scenario. The ligament may experience an acute sprain, strain, or tear that requires PCL reconstruction. Just because no one is creating in space - don’t be afraid to make it your own! Be a leader! - “Always be scanning!”: Look around you. Playing contact sports, like #soccer, #football or #basketball, you might be at a greater risk of low back pain and due to a herniated disc at your spine. Pathophysiology of herniated discs is believed to be the result of both mechanical compression of the nerve and an increase in inflammatory chemokines at the site of the herniation. It can be caused due to undergoing high-level athletic performance, having a physically demanding job or from being seated for long periods of time. Our lab is equipped with cutting edge marker and markerless 3D motion capture systems that enable clinicians to examine the motion (landing, cutting, sitting, standing, or walking) of patients with herniated disc before and after surgical and conservative intervention. *How do I get back to GOLF after a low back injury or surgery*? This is one the most common questions we face as spine surgeons. And one that we can pretty confidently assure them that they can return —— but when, and how? That remains a slight mystery of sorts. Timelines may vary a bit based on the level of play. And the mechanics of the swing may not perfectly resemble the pre-injury (or pre-surgical) swing — but that’s necessarily a bad thing!
