Suspension of the Paralympics Committee of India gives the nation a bad name globally. Paralympics Committee of India stands suspended. In a late evening development the Sports Ministry has suspended PCI for issues of non compliance and for not conducting elections on time. On the one hand India wins 111 medals at the Para Asian Games and is expected to double its medal count at the Paris Paralympics. On the other the PCI gets suspended. In all this the athlete loses out. With the shooting World Cup scheduled in New Delhi in March, which is also the last qualifying event for Paris, the athlete is bound to feel deflated. Sponsors will now become jittery as to why should they support the event and the athlete will find it hard to push themselves knowing their apex body stands suspended. Indian Paralympic sport was turning a corner. See the medal haul in Tokyo-19. From 4 in Rio it was a watershed. Paris is expected to be double of Tokyo. When the sport has momentum, to hear news like the suspension of the PCI is a real blow. India looks bad. With the world watching us, we look discredited. That’s where the problem is. Athletes will suffer and the national image will take a beating because of things that could well have been avoided. This suspension is a stark reminder how governance is still a massive issue. There is no easy fix. If we thought bringing athletes will solve everything it doesn’t. What needs to happen is we nurture a group of athletes , progressive sports administrators etc towards taking on larger roles and responsibilities. It can’t just be an experiment. This is a Process which will require a couple of Olympic cycles. It is important we start now to create enough quality human capital accross all levels of sport. Only then the environment will change. Having one CEO in an environment which hasn’t seen a corporate style of governance will only create friction. Work needs to be done slowly but urgently- we need to work on change accross the system and that needs patience and persistence in equal measure. For the moment through one hopes the shooting World Cup which has 56 countries participating goes off smooth. One hopes sponsors don’t withdraw ahead of Paris. One hopes athletes don’t find it hard to make the qualifying events. And finally one hopes elections are conducted asap and this mess resolved. India deserves better and Paralympic athletes more so. The Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Paris will be the quadrennial chance for athletes representing the United States to win medals on the biggest global stage possible — and it comes at a time where the ability to chase Olympic legend status can be hard financially, which has led to a revamping of how national governing bodies are allocated resources in the post-pandemic landscape.

No final decision yet on Russian athletes’ participation in Paralympics — official President of Russia's Paralympic Committee Pavel Rozhkov said that RPC will make it later after a thorough consideration MOSCOW/ Russia’s Paralympic Committee (RPC) has not yet made a final decision on Russian athletes’ participation in the 2024 Paris Games, RPC President Pavel Rozhkov told TASS. Earlier on Wednesday, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) published criteria, which allow Russian Paralympians to compete as individuals under a white flag featuring black lettering spelling out NPA. They are barred from taking part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Paralympic Games. The IPC also ruled that they were allowed to compete beyond the medal table. The national flags of Russia and Belarus, as well as other national symbols, are banned at the Paralympic Games. Those athletes who support a special military operation or have an ongoing national security contract will not be allowed to take part. "The final decision on our participation in the Games has not been made yet. We will make it later after a thorough consideration," said Rozhkov. "We are studying the criteria, which we received today, along with our federations and our national teams. However, even now we can state that they are discriminatory and still retain the previous well-known humiliating features. And we understand from the experience with the IOC (International Olympic Committee - TASS) and the IPC, as well as from all the previous steps of these organizations, that more criteria may appear.". #business #finance #financialservices

I've long held a fascination for captivating and lesser-known narratives and anecdotes within the realm of sports. Some of these stories are truly inspiring, while others can leave you surprised or amazed. With that in mind, I'm eager to share a selection of some these compelling stories here. 2016 Paralympics Games - 1500 meter final While the Paralympic Games typically receive less attention than the Olympics, the 2016 edition was far from short of extraordinary moments. A striking example of this was the 1,500-meter T13 final, which defied the assumption that Paralympians would invariably post slower times compared to their Olympic counterparts. In this gripping race, four visually impaired athletes, namely Abdellatif and Fouad Baka from Algeria, Tamiru Demisse from Ethiopia, and Henry Kirwa from Kenya outpaced the Olympic champion, American Matthew Centrowitz Jr., in the 1,500 meters. Abdellatif Baka's remarkable gold-winning time of 3:48.29 not only secured his Paralympic victory but also established a new world record in his classification. To provide context, Centrowitz's Olympic time was 3:50.00. This stunning achievement underscored the exceptional abilities of Paralympic athletes and challenged prevailing stereotypes. Last week, the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics & Paralympics released a report titled "Passing the Torch - Modernizing Olympic, Paralympic, & Grassroots Sports in America." The report touches on a wide range of topics, from support for grassroots initiatives, to the Olympic bid process to the role and independence of the Athletes' Commission. Several findings focus on the state of the American Safe Sport system and the challenges faced by the U.S. Center for SafeSport since it was established in 2017. While still in the process of a detailed consideration of the 277 page report, an initial review highlights numerous lessons learned and parallels that are applicable within the Canadian context, particularly as we continue to navigate the Abuse-Free Sport structure. Notably, a key recommendation highlights that the American system has a structural weakness in their governance model and funding mechanism, with a reliance on user fees paid by national sport governing bodies to support the SafeSport operations, resulting in potential incentives for organizations to deter participants from coming forward with complaints of misconduct. This structure undermines the trust in the independence and accountability of the entire system. In recommending that the U.S. Center be structured as an independent agency which is directly (and fully) funded by the federal government, the Commission notes that “...if athletes’ safety is as much a public value as fair competition, SafeSport needs to have public support.” More to come. https://www.csusop.org/ #safeguarding #safesport #linkedinsports
