This week marks Sports Challenge's 24th year and I was fortunate to spend most of the day there yesterday. Over the course of this week, nearly 50 student athletes (SAs) will spend 50 hours investing in themselves -- learning how to apply the same rigor of becoming a better athlete to becoming a better leader. Sports Challenge is a unique and high impact #leadershipdevelopment program. Watching the program in action is impressive and energizing...witnessing something complex in design come to life and look easy is anything but easy! Below are the key elements: - Curriculum: Mentoring, leadership and sports psychology classes and sport practices are aligned and integrated. Putting theory into practice - what does it look like to be a leader on and off the field/court? - Structure: Most sport camps are sport specific and skills based. At Sports Challenges, yes, there are sport training sessions that are sport specific. However, that's not the case for classes, workshops and speed/strength/agility sessions. Learning alongside SAs from other sports deepens learning while expanding social networks and building community. - Culture, Coaches and Staff: Culture is everything. It creates the environment where learning and development happens. Preparation is essential to creating culture. At Sports Challenge, coaches and staff are the culture keepers. They spend four days in staff training for a five day program. Coaches are responsible for facilitating sports practices, teaching leadership and sports psychology classes, serving as mentors and leading leadership forums. The majority of coaches and staff return for multiple years. I know there are so many Sports Challenge coach/staff alumni and student-athlete alumni out there. Tomorrow West Ham United FC head into our first 'Home' match of this new season at London Stadium While we always prepare for and expect new challenges, as ever we have looked to ease our on-the-day workload through good preparation and ensuring robust preventative measures are in place. As one tiny example, there will be 'Face Painters' and 'Bubble Performers' mingling pre-match with the 62,000 fans as they head into the Stadium. While doing a quick check on them on the day is always healthy, to be sure their fan interaction, especially with our 'Young Hammers', is at the safe standard we expect it to be. We are able to feel confident in that quick 'drop-in' check due to the pre-match checks already done finding out who will be attending in their team, how they will be operating and whether they hold a current DBS or have an operating history we can see. Alongside that, we are also able to share with them our expectations as well as how they can quickly report any concern to us. In doing this, those partners feel confident in delivering for us and we feel confident having them in place. This confidence means smiling people performing for our fans, which can only enhance the wider Match Day Experience for all. Better still, our marketing team responsible for setting these activities do not need chasing or 'asking' for what they may have in place. They know the importance of logging and sharing all such activities with Safeguarding, which shows the importance of having a positive safeguarding presence that all departments WANT to work with.
