Small steps can lead to extraordinary outcomes But, we often neglect these small steps. This small step that I'm refering to is a practice that makes a public relations person great. 📰 When I started out in my PR career, the first thing I did when I headed to the office was to flip through newspapers and magazines looking for articles that our agency's clients were featured in or for news that could impact our clients. This was often the first thing I did before having any coffee, and we had to do it at god speed because we had to report to clients ASAP. Once I flipped through all the newspapers, I had to cut out the relevant articles. I then compile them in a monitoring report that's emailed to the client. This time-consuming task can take up almost the entire morning. It may seem like the most trivial and menial task but every person who's been in PR long enough will tell you that it is the most essential step in building your craft. My former boss used to say that the best teacher in PR wasnt an experienced PR professional, it was the news. Apart from being on top of client news, media monitoring is super essential in helping PR people learn what makes news. How can we offer stories of value to editors and journalists if we are not even following the stories that they publish? To me, this is one small step that leads to great outcomes for PR people as we get to sharpen our sense of the stories that work and more importantly, the stories that don't work. Mastering small things are crucial in achieving big outcomes. For example, taking a short daily walk could lead to running a marathon eventually. "It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen." — John Wooden What are some small steps that have led to big outcomes for you? #publicrelations #pragency #smes

As a public relations student, having gone on tours of communication organizations and agencies and having been present at talks from guest speakers, a couple of things have struck me. The affect, whether positive or negative, that a public relations professional has on their workplace's success is incredible. The work done in a crisis situation is a prime example of this. There is a significant responsibility placed on the PR professional to ensure a successful and timely resolve to the situation. This includes gathering as much information as possible and making tough decisions - both very quickly. It also includes knowing when to not speak. Ultimately, handling the situation properly or improperly can either make or break the organization's reputation. Also, there is something to be said about the camaraderie within each of the workplaces that we have visited. Public relations is evidently a tightly-knit industry, with many workplaces and professionals working collaboratively on several projects, while good work is celebrated universally. #PublicRelations #Communication #Professional

Lately, when my colleagues ask me what am I up to, I often tell them that I am 'PRing'. A clear corruption of the sentence 'The practice of Public Relations'. This is the best way I can express the intangible benefits of my vocation. Indeed, I always advocate for a quantifiable and tangible approach to communications. We must always measure what we do, so that decision makers can have an improved understanding of value that we bring to the table. However, despite my commitment to encourage some form of return on investment when it comes to Public Relations. I do not negate the fact that there are elements of PR that simply go unmeasured. For example, how do I quantify an 'idea', a 'spark' between two stakeholders, a lively interaction during a meeting or even the firmness of a handshake? How do I quantify my gut feeling about a particular situation, based on previous social interactions? Therefore, one of the biggest struggles of any communication professional is attempting to quantify or explain the intangible but highly valuable elements of PR. It is indeed one of the approaches I try to bring to my work every single day. Assessing or trying to understand the impact of the intangible benefits of PR is what keeps me going every single day. #Communications #PublicRelations #IntangibleBenefits #WorkLife #Measure #ReturnOnInvestment

The Reputation Go-to Guy | Global Speaker | Facilitator | Advisor. I speak on How to Manage and Protect Corporate Reputations and Stakeholder Relationships. Why? Because Your Reputation Matters!
I recently had a prospective client asking me to quote them on the writing of an external communication policy. I recommended a few days of work working with them, but she was of the opinion that it required only the preparation of a 2-page document (1/2 days’ worth of work). I had to carefully explain to her that such a document required a lot of background work if you wanted to give it justice. Here’s why. https://lnkd.in/dKQKwnA #mediarelations #crisiscommunications #businessandmanagement #internalcommunications

Should PR managers constantly track the news? From time to time, I hear from some of communcation managers that they've stopped keeping up with the news and now feel much better. It's hard to disagree. The news is often negative, distracting and time-consuming. What concerns me about these admissions is how professionally sound it is for specialists whose primary responsibility is to manage communications and prevent crisis situations. To me, it doesn't seem very professional. On one hand, if you're working in a very niche industry, that isn't greatly affected by external events, then staying updated might not be necessary. On the other hand, is there really such an industry or company that isn't influenced by today's political and economic upheavals? News spreads like ripples in a pond, and even if your company or client isn't at the center, sooner or later it will affect them. I remember one case early in my career when I worked as an editor for a packaging materials magazine. The manager tasked me with writing a piece featuring an expert who was under investigation at the time (for ties with the opposition). When I shared this information with the manager, she was extremely surprised. In my view, communication specialists cannot afford the luxury of disconnecting from the news agenda, as it poses risks for effective communication. What are your thoughts?
