Happy new financial year!! I’m taking this moment to reflect on my personal and professional goals from the start of the year. Professionally, I’ve achieved the first goal, for Conscious Combat Club to become a registered charity! The second goal here is lacking specificity so technically we’ve achieved that too. We’ve raised $605 so far! To be more specific though, my goal is to raise $350,000. Achieving this will enable us to hit the final goal, to open a dedicated trauma informed martial arts and movement centre. (I’ll pop the link in the comments if you’d like to make a tax deductible donation 😉) Personally, my goals for this quarter are: 🪩 To complete 40 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes (1 more than 3 per week). Consistency is Queen 👑 🪩 To pot the plant cuttings I have sitting in water and repot all my unhappy plants 🌱 (I put this off for 100% of the last quarter) 🪩 To improve my strength by 20%. Something I always tell my clients is to 'Celebrate the wins, and learn from the setbacks', so it's probably time I added this to LinkedIn. In October 2023, I completed the Goggins or 4x4x48 Challenge. I raised £871 for the Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity, and really tested myself mentally and physically. The challenge involves running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. So 48 miles in total in two days, although being the Muppet I am, I added a few extras to make sure I covered 2 marathons in 2 days - 52.4 miles (but don't tell my wife I did extra). The toughest part was getting up at 1 and 5 in the morning to run in the dark on my own on exhausted legs. Down the line, I'll probably add a blog about the lessons learnt and odd (near hallucinogenic) thoughts that go through your head under that kind of stress. However, for now, the biggest win for me personally was a reminder of the importance of throwing yourself into challenging situations. It's easy to stay in your lane and keep your head down, but by throwing a stretch goal in there, your horizons are broadened in the day-to-day. We learn so much from challenging situations.

For the state of South Carolina, I believe Yeamans Hall does just that. Sitting just 12 miles from downtown Charleston and designed by one of my favorites, Seth Raynor, in 1924, Yeamans Hall sits on land that used to be the site of a 17th century plantation owned by the Yeamans family. When the country club was founded, it was built to attract wealthy northern financial men to Charleston in the fall and winter with 200-300 house sites. Today, it continues to be a successful private club with what I imagine to be one of the toughest waiting lists to add your name to in the country. What makes Yeamans Hall my favorite in South Carolina? People have asked me when making this list what criteria I’ve used, and it really comes down to three things: 1) The feeling you have when playing it, 2) How well you can remember each hole after the round, and 3) How badly you want to tee it up again on #1 after tapping in on #18. Maybe I’m biased because I grew up in SC, but for me, I’ve never played a course which puts me in a calmer/happier mental state and one where I want to tee it up again on #1 after I’m finished than Yeamans. It’s just such a fun course to play! If you have had the pleasure of playing it, I’m curious to hear if you enjoyed it as much as me ⛳️

I thought I did a lot of running during the game and so I then checked to see what the average premier league player runs in a match. I realised why I was so tired and my legs and ankles are aching two days after....I ran 5.2miles, the average premier league (football/soccer) player runs 7miles! BIG difference though! I'm one or two years older than them... I do have one more game of football before we wrap up the year. Raising money for the football teams I manage/coach (under 9s and under 6s - It's my youngest child in the picture with me) to help contribute towards tracksuits and jackets for the children. That's this coming weekend. Less then one week until my birthday and 100 hole hike in support of Youth on Course! This year, for my annual birthday fundraiser for youth sport, I'm taking on the Youth on Course 100 Hole Hike challenge to play 100 holes of golf (walking!) in one day while raising money for a great charitable cause with every hole I play. Join me in supporting Youth on Course, the nonprofit organization that provides youth with access to life-changing opportunities through golf. Donations will receive a tax receipt from Golf Canada after the event! I've placed speed golf, run a marathon, completed many track and road races and hiked mountains, but I truly expect this to be one of the most challenging adventures I've taken on. We will be golfing from sun rise to sun set to reach our 100 hole challenge while walking dozens of kilometers and taking hundred of swings.
