Work currently takes me back to dive into the subject of #SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels). As a former "Aviator" having worked for Shell Aviation the big majority of my corporate days, I'm delighted to look closer at the green side of Aviation fuels and get back to old stomping grounds. What is already getting clear to me very quickly is the limited supply around feedstocks for SAF if we want to get anywhere close to where International Air Transport Association (IATA) wants to be by 2050 (65% of Aviation fuel requirements are replaced by SAF). What about other technologies relieving us on the SAF front? Looking at the latest from Fokker Technologies Holding B.V. (post below) , we can expect hybrid airplanes running on a mix between H2 and SAF (or of course regular jet fuel) for the future. Yes... naturally this announcement leaves a lot of questions open, of how much H2 is actually used on that plane. Keen to hear the opinion of my fellow former Aviation fuel colleagues. 🚀 The past few months have been an exciting time for Avioxx as we move forward in our #SAF development programme. Fokker Next Gen is designing a clean sheet aircraft to contribute towards the net zero carbon emission vision of the future of flight. The design is a single aisle narrow body commercial aircraft seating 120 to 150 passengers, and has a flight range of 2,590 kms (1,400 nm). They came it will seamlessly fit into current airline operations against comparable cost (CASK). The aircraft will have an innovative dual fuel design, enabling the aircraft to fly on liquid hydrogen combustion (#LH2), sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF), or – if no other fuel type is available – jet fuel. When pure hydrogen is combusted, the only byproducts are oxygen and water, meaning a flight purely powered by LH2 would produce zero CO2 emissions while in flight. If the liquid hydrogen has been produced through one of the various zero-emission production methods (e.g. green hydrogen) this will provide a truly zero-CO2 emitting fuel. Although the company has said the flight is to enter service in 2035, Fokker Next Gen is “exploring all possibilities to accelerate this timeline.” See a picture of the tank configuration in the comments #SustainableAviation #LiquidHydrogen

Swedish company PowerCell Group has secured a follow-on contract with German H2 aircraft startup H2FLY to supply fuel cell systems worth 40 million Swedish kronor for delivery in 2023 and 2024. This comes as the second order placed by H2FLY with PowerCell Group, showcasing their confidence in their hydrogen-electric solutions for the aviation industry. 💪🔋 H2FLY, founded by aerospace engineers in 2015, is determined to bring the world's first certifiable hydrogen-electric aircraft propulsion system to market. Their ongoing HEAVEN Project, focusing on fuel cells and cryogenic technology, is another step towards greener skies. 🛰️💨 The fuel cell systems, with a capacity of 1.8 megawatts, will contribute to the development of H2FLY's next-generation FC system 'H175' for aircraft with 20 to 80 seats. These hydrogen-electric solutions aim to enable higher flight altitudes while significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions, making sustainable air travel a reality. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Josef Kallo, CEO of H2FLY, emphasizes the enormous potential of hydrogen-powered aircraft and the company's vision to have their systems certified and in operation worldwide by the end of this decade.
