The legal and social challenges faced by older LGBT+ individuals are frequently overlooked. That's why Paul Maddock, Director at DWF and a member of the LGBT+ Lawyers Division committee, provides an overview of these important issues in this insightful article that we're pleased to share. By recognising and mitigating risks in areas such as probate, solicitor choice, and elderly care, we can help ensure that older LGBT+ people receive the respect and services they deserve. Attorney & Professional Problem Solver | Head of Legal | 2024 Washington Leadership Institute Fellow | Washington State Bar Association DEI Council Member
The King County Bar Bulletin’s Executive Director shared her article space with me this month. I have much gratitude for Christina Coad. I wrote a piece from lived experience, which included parts of my personal and professional journey. It ultimately highlights the necessity of 2SLGBTQIA+ competent and affirming (not just or only identifying) attorneys in all practice areas statewide, including in King County. The article includes some potentially surprising statistics about our state’s bar and some anecdotal experience from yours truly that can shed some light on barriers queer attorneys may face making it to licensure. #diversity #representationmatters #diversifythelegalprofession #lgbtq #transattorneys #dei #deib #probono #pathwaysintothelegalprofession #hirelgbtqia #trainlgbtqia #mentorlgbtqia #lgbtqiaplus #lgbtqia2s #legalrecruitment #lawschooladmissions #allyship #practiceequity #leadershipdevelopment #allies #inclusiveculture #intersectionality #underrepresented #servantleadership #livedexperience

This article about #EDI, mental health and well being, and the legal professor by Sania Chaudhry is from 2021, and very salient today: “ I belong to a profession with high rates of mental-health problems and great stigma around discussing them. Racialized, disabled and LGBTQ lawyers face additional discrimination that compounds this mental-health burden. The experience of negative mental-health effects is inextricably linked to systemic disadvantage and the need for equity, diversity and inclusion, or EDI, in the legal profession.”

Family Law Partner at Michelmores ⚖️ Finances on divorce, cohabitation, wealth protection & nuptial agreements ✍️
Thanks to The Legal Diary and Edward Fennell for picking up on my thoughts in relation to the announcement this week of changes in the law towards equality for people living with HIV and female same-sex couples in accessing IVF. A step towards fairness, perhaps, but some way to go to address some of the legal and financial inequalities, which can unwittingly lead to some particularly complex legal issues. https://lnkd.in/eKBdPgvX #michelmores #fertilitylaw #ivf #lgbtq+

Women in Law Section 2024 Annual Meeting Program Thursday, January 18, 2024 | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. | 5.0 MCLE Credits | NYC Friday, January 19, 2024 | 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.| Award Reception | NYC For full meeting information, agenda and registration, please click here: https://lnkd.in/gMwW-fpF Each One Reach One – Educating Our Community About the ERA In November 2024, New Yorkers will vote on whether to amend the State Constitution to specifically codify equal rights as part of the foundational rights of citizens of New York. In addition, passing this amendment would make New York the 28th state to have constitutional equal rights protections for women and other communities on a state level. However, a basic understanding of civics is often lacking. Many New Yorkers are not aware of this potentially monumental change in state rights. The details of the proposed amendment, what communities are impacted, and the technical process for amending the State Constitution are also unknown by many residents of New York. During this Annual Meeting, WILS will bring together professors, legislators and practicing lawyers to educate our legal community on the content and potential impact of the ERA and encourage them to educate others ahead of the November vote.
