For details and to register follow: https://lnkd.in/e-3u57uK Seventy-five years have passed since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Clearly there is still much work to be done, but there is much room for optimism. The hashtag #ClarifyCompulsoryEducation campaign stemming from the IDEC 2023 Resolution is setting the stage for a brighter future by turning people’s attention to Democratic Education. It’s based upon human rights and offers to cultivate a population more inclined to invest in peace than in war. Social justice and self-determination are the cornerstones of mental health, and Suvemae – Pioneer of Possibility is a fabulous resource that opens our imaginations to the possibilities for establishing education that serves the best interests of all children. A recent UNESCO report, Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education, “aims to catalyze a global debate on how education needs to be rethought in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and fragility.” These hashtag #ClarifyCompulsoryEducation events respond to this call and Suvemae – Pioneer of Possibility enlightens the conversation with a look at concrete action. Please include this hashtag when sharing notice of these events with others - hashtag #ClarifyCompulsoryEducation.

Lori's Voice was founded and established by Lori Hastings to help young people with disabilities. The organization evolved from Lori Hastings' great love for children and the realization of the many challenges young people face when living with a disability. Living with a disability herself, Lori understands the medical needs that are often not covered by insurance. A fun fact people may not know about Lori is she has published three beautiful children's books: "Blue Bear the Bear with No Hair," "Green with N.V.," and "Rosie Rose and Her Great Big Nose." Lori and husband Dave Hastings have made an incredible impact on children with neurologic and generative diseases here in West Michigan. To hear more about Lori's Voice and many of the amazing resources available in our community, tune into their story on StoryCorps. If you want to read about the organizations, information can be found in my book, "The Power of Community Connectedness: Creating Lifelong Impact & Inclusion for Individuals with Disabilities." Books can be found on Amazon using the link in the comments and at The Bookman here in Grand Haven. There is no need to journey alone. There are people and organizations who want to walk alongside you. Reach out. It is my hope that other communities will start similar organizations. Any one of the book's contributors would be happy to share their model and answer questions. Community Connectedness is powerful! We truly are better together. #community #connections #impact #inclusion #disabilities #resources https://lnkd.in/gUQKqxDD

TEDxYouth Speaker, Community Youth Citizen of the Year, Minderoo Intern, Civic Engagement YAG, Carers WA YAG, VCI Ambassador, National SWAN Sibling Ambassador, Carer/Disadvantaged Youth Advocate, Passionate Change-Maker
With the WA State Government updating their Youth Action Plan, Valuing Children Initiative suggested that their #ambassadors may like to contribute an expressive piece of artwork or writing, communicating their perspectives. Having contributed extensively late last year to the #YouthAction Plan consultation by providing my thoughts and perspectives on the priorities of youth, through #forum participation and online survey completion, this task appealed to me immensely! I immediately began summarising the priotities I had raised in the survey and forum last year - #climatechange, #youthmentalhealth services (particularly emergency/after-hours), youth #unemployment, #childpoverty, #lgbtqia and #genderdiversity, #costoflivingcrisis, #homelessness, #firstnations voices, #regionaldevelopment, #disabilityinclusion and #youngcarers. Each and every one of these issues I have either observed first-hand, is extremely close to my heart and/or I have personally experienced. These sentiments in the poem were expressed passionately and from a position of genuine insight and awareness. I am not a talented poet, by any means. Mathematics is by far my preferred, and stronger, subject over English! Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that my emotive words of desperation outlining many of the increasingly insurmountable issues young people are currently facing, resonate with policy makers and are taken into consideration, along with the priorities communicated by other young people consulted. I must take this opportunity to applaud both the WA State Government, as well as the Federal Government, for their increasing introduction of #initiatives in which #diverse, young #perspectives are actively being sought. I personally have seen the introduction of an increasing number of programs in which young people are being shown that their opinions matter through generous financial remuneration and the provision of travel expenses, tools to facilitate content creation and implementation of other such measures. Young Voices Shaping Disability Activism in Europe I had the pleasure of presenting my latest research on young disabled activists in Europe at the recent Independent Living Research Network webinar. It was an opportunity to delve into their experiences and views on disability politics. The project explores how these young individuals are making a significant impact by: Bringing fresh perspectives: Their voices are shaping the future of disability activism with innovative ideas. Highlighting participation barriers: We identified the challenges they face in fully engaging in social movements. By understanding these obstacles, we can work towards dismantling them. Envisioning an inclusive future: Their dreams of a society built on accessibility and true inclusion are at the heart of the project. The research utilised a four-phase approach to gain a comprehensive understanding: Phase 1: We launched a survey to gauge opportunities and challenges faced by young activists within disabled people’s movements. Phase 2: In-depth interviews explored these themes further, delving into both current experiences and their vision for the future. Phase 3: A "Future Laboratory" workshop empowered young activists to imagine the role of disabled people’s movements in achieving their goals. Phase 4: We're currently producing a documentary film that will showcase youth participation in disability activism across Europe. Throughout the project, a central theme emerged: the importance of creating real-life alternatives to dominant cultures that often invalidate the experiences of disabled people. This is precisely what the young activists are actively working towards. Their vision is an attempt to produce counter alternatives to the current forms of social organisation – alternatives rooted in accessibility, participation, and inclusivity. Intersectional approaches will be key in building these spaces and fostering a future where all forms of participation of valued, respected, and welcomed. It was exciting to moderate a panel on "The Experience of Reporting Abuse Online" at last week's Trust and Safety Research Conference. Thanks to the Stanford Internet Observatory for the wonderful lineup of speakers: Kat Lo, Alex Leavitt, PhD, Jacques Marcoux, Leijie Wang, and Amanda Goharian. I learned quite a bit from their research presentations and look forward to sharing the video of the session once its live. Here's the session page in the meantime: https://lnkd.in/gXaz8V2X
