Visitors to the Main Reading Room at the Library are inspired to pause for a minute, tilt their heads back and take in Human Understanding, a mural by artist Edwin Howland Blashfield. In this blog, Publication Editor Mark Hartsell introduces viewers far and near to the veil of ignorance, the book of wisdom, and twelve painted figures in the mural and what they are meant to symbolize. Mark also discloses the identity of a former president modeled in the mural embodying America and science. See if you can guess who it is. #LibraryOfCongress #Philosophy #Mural https://lnkd.in/ewFv2c6E

100 Years of Surrealism Surrealism, meaning ‘above realism’ or ‘more than real’, was one of the twentieth century’s most popular and pervasive art movements. Launched by French poet André Breton in 1924, it affected all branches of the arts and spread to all corners of the globe. My book about Surrealism introduces you to the main ideas and events of the 100-year-old movement as well the art of an international cast of practitioners. Writing this book allowed me to show that there is much more to Surrealism than just the melted clocks and bowler hats familiar to many. In honour of the centenary of the movement, I’d like to share a list of some of the books that I particularly like about specific aspects of Surrealism: https://lnkd.in/eAyQUu84

Are you looking for something BIG? How do you prove that something isn't just in your imagination? You ask someone else to look for it as well. But what about making your imagination visible to others? That is called art. Illustrators do just that. They take something imaginary–something that only the author can see–and make it appear for us on the page. It may feel like magic but it is an illustrator's talent, hard work, and creativity that make something "believed" be "seen." Confused, yet? Perhaps our newest philosophical title, "Ludwig and the Rhinoceros", will make sense of this conundrum in three bold, screen-printed colors. All this, and more, in our September Newsletter! ---> https://lnkd.in/ev99f2tF

I've been doing some preliminary research on Valkyries as part of my abstract prep and was overjoyed to find an article by Lindsey Williams in Ex Historia (2019) which brilliantly covered the historical, textual, and archeological understanding of Valkyries and how this little often overlooked figure of the Pantheon was adapted, shaped, and modified first by the remarkable influence of Wagner's Opera, in particular costume design, through to her character stereotype being founded and forged in Bugs Bunny cartoon, Marvel Comics, Marvel Films and further expanded into video games such as God of War. THIS is precisely the angle and passion I have for this pantheon figure who is neither spirit nor goddess and at times, even in traditional sagas, can be more human than divine. And I know for sure her article will form a strong bedrock for me to explore and investigate the Variants of Valkyries in modern Norse fantasy fiction. Just need to write a winning abstract and then hope for a lenient deadline for the essay as I am a part time worker and Mum these days... But it's lit the spark I needed to dive into this head first.

🎥🎭 Join our recent webinar on the fascinating world of art! Discover the subjective nature of greatness and why the samurai film masterpiece is a must-watch for all art enthusiasts. 🖼️🌟 #ArtEnthusiasts #SamuraiFilmMasterpiece #WebinarSummary Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum"

What we encounter in works of art and philosophy are objective versions of our own pains and struggles, evoked and defined in sound, language or image. Artists and philosophers not only show us what we have felt, they present our experiences more poignantly and intelligently than we have been able; they give shape to aspects of our lives that we recognize as our own, yet could never have understood so clearly on our own. They explain our condition to us, and thereby help us to be less lonely with, and confused by it. We may be obliged to continue burrowing underground, but through creative works, we can at least acquire moments of insight into our woes, which spare us feelings of alarm and isolation (even persecution) at being afflicted by them. In their different ways, art and philosophy help us, in Schopenhauer’s words, to turn pain into knowledge. --Alain de Botton, The Consolations of Philosophy. Artwork || William Orpen (1878-1931)
