Wellness is a Multi-Faceted Concept Health and wellness is a “hot” topic on college and university campuses. Administrators are trying any number of planning and scheduling alternatives to support the health and wellness of students, faculty and staff. There is general consensus that implementing a variety of health and wellness alternatives on campus will not only support the physical and mental health of students but also foster a more inclusive and supportive community. Although much is being proposed, there has been surprisingly little discussion as to how to define and quantify the wellness everyone is trying to promote. Before we can plan and design for it, we need to agree on just it is wellness. Wellness is a multi-faceted concept that encompasses various dimensions essential for overall well-being. These dimensions include physical, mental, emotional, social, intellectual, and environmental health, each contributing uniquely to a person's quality of life.

What is “well-being?” 🤔 This has been an intentional process of discovery at Clemson University. And I remain humbled and honored to be leading it as the Inaugural Chief Well-being Officer. 🐅 My favorite part of this process is the opportunity to sit down one on one with people and have them tell me what wellness and well-being mean to them as a person. Below is a blog I am starting to share this work and the next steps in the process. After reading, I invite you to share your thoughts on “What is well-being.” #clemsonuniversity #wellness #wellbeing #chiefwellnessofficer #highereducationleadership #highereducation #healthycampus #healthycommunities

Watch now! A panel of institutional partners and wellness experts discuss student and campus well-being, as well as opportunities for colleges and universities – and their campus stores – to get involved. The panelists shared professional and personal observations about student well-being today; why supporting campus well-being should be a high priority goal; and the importance of creating a “toolbox” with wellness practices and tools. They spotlighted well-being programs and initiatives from campuses nationwide, including Be Well. Be You. by Barnes & Noble College. This is why employee-driven solutions are necessary. In a critical, participatory approach we actively move away from unsustainable workloads, weight-biased programming, top-down approaches to supposed wellness, etc. My dissertation - Landscaping Wellness at Work: A Participatory Model for Worker-Centered Health - contributes to this conversation as an example of a participatory approach.

At last month’s Power Hour, we discussed setting goals for personal well-being. Our student clinicians taught us about the benefits of strategic goal setting to help us through challenging times. We chatted about various barriers to setting goals that you may have and learned how to strategically plan how we will tackle our to-do items and stressors in a productive way. Let’s continue our summer series by taking the slower summer months to recalibrate and focus on our well-being! This month in Power Hour, we will be focusing on Mastering Work-Life Balance. How do we maintain a healthy balance in demanding careers? What can we do to set reasonable boundaries that let us prioritize both ourselves and the great work that we do? Join us as we create space for you to de-stress in a safe environment, talk to other trainees about your experiences, and learn skills that you can take back into your personal and academic life to take control of your situation. De-Stress Power Hour led by Student Clinicians, in collaboration with the UAB Master of Arts in Counseling program and the UAB Medicine Office of Wellness. Trainees from all programs and departments are welcome – no faculty, staff, or administrators allowed. This is a safe space for you to connect with other trainees, spend an hour to invest in your wellness, and skill build around the monthly topic. For any questions or concerns, please reach out to Laurence Boitet, PhD (Lmblac@uab.edu).
