PE due diligence usually involves four workstreams: expert calls, a survey, a market model, and secondary research. The big providers typically use excel and powerpoint and a whole lot of desktop research. This is valuable, and hard, and interesting, and takes judgment, and I enjoyed (almost) all of my experiences doing this kind of diligence at Bain & Company. That said, it's a shame that more providers aren't embedding data science in the diligence process, because it can almost always add a ton of value beyond the usual toolkit. Are there geographic clusters of target companies that make sense to approach? What can satellite imagery tell us about addressability of customer sites? What topics are customers mentioning about our app, and what effect do those topics have on ratings? Data science, from ML to AI (a term I have mixed feelings about), offers answers to these questions at scale, further enriching the still-valuable perspectives that come from the four traditional due diligence workstreams.
