🌱 IT'S A WIN FOR NATURE! 🌱
Following months of deliberations, the 27 countries of the EU voted today to adopt the world's first-ever Nature Restoration Law.
The new law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and seas, with specific targets including reversing the decline of pollinators and restoring 25,000 kilometres of rivers to free-flowing conditions.
Good news for nature and the millions of European people who depend on it.
Great news for nature in Europe! 🌿🏆
🌱 The EU Council has formally adopted the #RestorationLaw, aiming to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
🐟 River ecosystems are also a priority, with a target to make 25,000 km of rivers #FreeFlowing.

As we celebrate #NationalPollinatorWeek here in the US, the EU and its 27 countries just passed the Nature Restoration Law! The new law aims to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and seas, with specific targets that includes reversing the decline of pollinators and restoring over 15,000 miles of rivers.
Some may recall that in January of 2021, the Biden administration issued an Executive Order on tackling the climate crisis and biodiversity loss by committing the US to 30x30—conserving 30% of our lands and coastal waters by 2030—through the America the Beautiful initiative. In 2022, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework—a United Nations treaty—was signed by almost 200 countries committing to address the biodiversity crisis. It includes a pledge to achieve 30% of degraded land, water, coastal, and marine ecosystems “under effective restoration” by 2030.
Although we may not be precisely on target to achieving these lofty goals by 2030 and it’s a certainty that there will be peaks and valleys through this new #biodiversity-positive global trajectory, I do feel the momentum building as we realize the intrinsic value in being a part of nature and not apart from it.

♻️ The European Parliament adopts the Nature Restoration Law!
📝 On June 17 2024, the Nature Restoration Law was officially adopted. The law’s final text confirms the planned targets: to restore at least 20 per cent of Europe’s marine and terrestrial territory by 2030 and all endangered habitats by 2050.

Today the European Parliament adopted the EU nature restoration law. Although it is not in force yet where it needs to be adopted by Council, before being published in the EU Official Journal and entering into force, it
is a great leap for the EU & #sustainability transition. It changes the policy focus from preservation and conversation of nature to its de facto restoration. This shifts the focus from individuals to nature and collective rights. It will have profound influence on other laws and re-proritise the EU policy from overconsumption to reasonable use of land, water etc. In the times of #anthropocene legal measures, next to collective actions, may lead to the most optimal actions.

The EU Nature Restoration Law will require member states to implement measures to restore nature on at least 20 per cent of the Union's land and marine areas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
"To reach these targets, EU countries must restore at least 30% of habitat types covered by the new law to a good condition by 2030, increasing to 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050," according to a statement from the European Parliament.

EU Parliament passes Nature Restoration Law - Although watered down, it passed with a large majority. A big win for nature with the objective of restoring 20% of European seas and land by 2030, and almost all degraded ecosystems by 2050! #naturepositive#naturebasedsolutions#climateaction
Postive steps today in the European Parliament with the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law - EU countries need to restore at least 30% of habitats in poor condition by 2030, 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050
