I’ll be devoting most of the summer to caring for my son and writing. Here’s how I’m setting myself up for success. ✏ Seeing Writing as a Gift I Can Give Myself Making time to write helps me feel like me, when so much of my energy and attention is funneled toward my son. Of course I want to make progress, but even just creating a world that I want to live in and daydream about feels like a treat that will carry me through the summer. And when I get back to my desk in the fall, I know I’ll be glad I carved out a little time to write. ✏Making a Plan I’ve been gathering inspiration, playing around with a few different ideas, and then choosing one to focus on. Then I’ll figure out what steps I need to take to write a full draft. ✏Finding Ways to Fit Writing In (Even when I’m deep in mom mode) For me that means writing during my son’s OT and PT sessions. I take notes on my phone. I leave my podcasts off so I can daydream in the car. Whatever, wherever! It all counts! ✏Becoming Friends with Other Writers It is soooo helpful to know others writers who are struggling with the same things and finding ways to work around them. They get it. And when they get excited for me, it makes me feel more confident and energized. ✏Getting Feedback Along the Way Even a quick “this is really promising” from my agent or a trusted writing friend can be enough to help me keep going. And when I get stuck, I love being able to talk it through with an expert. I make so much more progress that way that it feels like magic.
