Europe is ready to renew the challenging mission to search for traces of life on Mars. This week has been so important and meaningful for all the engineers, technicians and experts who have been working for so many years to meeting these challenges. The European Space Agency - ESA has signed the framework contract with a Thales Alenia Space-led consortium to continue the development of ExoMars mission, now set for launch between October and December 2028. ExoMars2028 is an unprecedented scientific and technological challenge, from the use of innovative materials for thermal protection during entry into Mars’s atmosphere to the development of software for navigation, control and landing on the planet’s surface. ExoMars mission will include capabilities to penetrate the Martian surface to a depth of up to two metres, the first ever of its kind. The results of these technological challenges will make a fundamental contribution to the ongoing robotic and human exploration of the Red Planet and Solar System. NISAR is the first Earth science spacecraft collaboration between NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization and represents one of the biggest #partnerships between the agencies in general, with NASA alone spending more than $1 billion in formulation and development of the mission. NASA is providing an L-band #radar and engineering payload, while ISRO is providing the S-band payload, spacecraft bus and launch vehicle. NISAR mission's high-resolution radar imaging capabilities will provide India with valuable insights into #disasterresponse, #environmentalmonitoring, #resourcemanagement and #scientific #research. The most important thing, NISAR’s SAR data will be freely available and open to the public, aligning with NASA's Earth Science open data policy. This accessibility ensures that Indian researchers and experts can utilize the data for various studies and applications. 🛰️Whether it’s up in space 🌌or down here on earth 🌏 it’s exciting to see colleagues at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration & X, the moonshot factory working on next gen 📡 laser communication systems! 👩🏻🚀NASA’s ILLUMA-T team has developed a laser communications system that will perform tests on the International Space Station. Using infrared beams, it can send and receive data from two points in space. Soon, it could facilitate sending space mission findings to the Earth. 🪐As this technology develops, laser comms could facilitate Moon, Mars, and deep space missions. ⚡️Laser comms have also been progressing on Earth too! X’s ( innovation arm of Google parent company Alphabet Inc. ) project Taara is a moonshot that asked “What if we leapfrogged to the optical spectrum and unlocked 30 times more data capacity?” Taara can connect the many remote rural areas that lack internet connectivity without expensive and time intensive cables and infrastructure. It’s uses light to transmit information at super high speeds through the air as a very narrow invisible beam. There are still over 3 billion people without access to the internet. Internet connectivity is a key driver of human educational, economic and social development. Laser comms here and above could radically improve how we send media and information to each other. Space provides a unique vantage point for studying, understanding, and monitoring activities and changes on planet Earth. As satellite technology, and the software associated with it improves and gets more accessible, the insights from space-based observations can be utilized by more people for governmental, industry, academic, and non-profit uses. Observations from satellites are one of the only ways to get uniform data-sets for activities and changes across the globe, and so they are an important underpinning of international sustainability initiatives. NASA’s pioneering Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment will be the first demonstration of laser, or optical, communications from as far away as Mars. Launching with NASA’s Psyche mission to a metal-rich asteroid of the same name on Thursday, Oct. 12, DSOC will test key technologies designed to enable future missions to transmit denser science data and even stream video from the Red Planet. Here are five things to know about this cutting-edge technology demonstration: 1. DSOC is the first time NASA will test how lasers could increase data transmission from deep space. 2. The tech demo involves equipment both in space and on Earth 3. DSOC will encounter unique challenges. 4.
