Fascinating story. Every follower of mine should read this post -- it is important. What this article (link: https://lnkd.in/eax-EqEz) is referring to as a "data breach" is a case where people had access to folders on a shared drive that they should not have had access. In this case -- people with access to the computer shared drive were able to view the private folders of some elected officials. This happened to me once. I had instructed my IT vendor to create some private folders where only I was supposed to have access. Well -- it was not set up properly and any employee with access could theoretically view the contents. Thankfully, I caught it and never had any reason to believe anyone had accessed them. However, I was very irritated by this as I was explicity clear with my request. My advice to anyone reading this post is to double check your folder permissions, especially for any electeds and members of the executive staff, with your IT team. Perhaps -- double check it by logging into a dummy account or an account of an individual who recently separated from the organization. ----- Are you a city manager or HR director with a senior level vacancy? Lets talk about equity... In Puerto Rico, we can't fill these positions because the cap on salary for the Goverment of Puerto Rico was $16,140 a Year. Well what are the requirements? Lets See... 1. Bachelors Degree. 2. The ability to read, write and talk in Spanish and English . 3. Must be a veteran... A veteran that can meet all those requirements is worth more than $16,140 a year. Why would work for that amount of money in an island where even the general healthcare sucks for our families? This is why representation matters. How can we tell congress that we need additional funding for the same programs that work in the states?

New data protection laws have implications for African churches In September 2023, Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner issued fines totaling KES 9,375,000 (more than $60,000 USD) to three institutions for contravening the Data Protection Act. The highest penalty of KES 4,550,000 (more than $30,000 USD) went to an educational facility for using minors’ pictures without consent from parents or guardians. These were the first penalties given since the law came into effect in 2019. Churches and church organizations are not exempt from these regulations. Data Privacy places legal requirements on institutions (including churches and other faith-based communities). It affects how churches collect, store and use member’s data such as names, addresses and contacts of congregants. It also has ramifications for filming or taking photos of members during church services or other events which might require the consent of the attendants. https://lnkd.in/euTndgWA

The Farage case highlights the power of data: SARS and DSARS in Employment As employment dynamics evolve, so do the tools available to individuals in disputes with organizations. Subject Access Requests (SARs) and Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) have emerged as formidable weapons, allowing individuals to access personal information held by employers. Recent reports have highlighted the increasing use of SARs and DSARs, shedding light on how employees leverage these requests to gain a deeper understanding of their professional relationships. From seeking "smoking guns" for negotiations or employment tribunals to uncovering sensitive messages about themselves, individuals are harnessing the power of data to protect their rights and interests. However, the rise of SARs and DSARs also poses challenges for organizations. The obligation to provide requested information may lead to the release of sensitive data with potential legal consequences. While employers strive to safeguard their interests, they must navigate this landscape with caution. https://lnkd.in/eWZYpgGn

Data Protection Strategist | Specialist in Data in Social Housing | Author of 'A Practical Guide to Data Protection in Social Housing' published by Law Brief Publishing Ltd | Speaker & Presenter | #StartWithPurpose
Next week I'll be speaking on a panel at the IRMS - Information and Records Management Society Conference in #Brighton, about #ImposterSyndrome with the awesome 🖖🏼 Scott Sammons, Georgina Daugherty and David Smith. And, of course, I feel there are so many people who would be a better choice than me to be on the panel - ironic, huh? 🤦♀️ In preparation I've been reading about imposter syndrome, and how to harness it instead of letting it keep me nervous. I've still got a few days to go, so I'm not quite there yet! But I am feeling a little bit braver about speaking up, because (according to my reading) having imposter syndrome shows I care about getting things right! One thing I have to admit I downplay quite a bit is my book "A Practical Guide to #DataProtection in #SocialHousing". So while I'm still offering it at the discounted rate (I know, I said I wouldn't have any more available but two people have asked for it recently, so I will get another ten to sell at cost), I'll try to downplay it less! To make it a wee bit easier, I'm sharing the very lovely feedback from Emma Martins, former Guernsey Data Protection Commissioner: ""A Practical Guide to Data Protection in Social Housing” is clearly for a specialist market but it makes for enlightening reading for anyone interested/involved in data. The preface starts with “I’m passionate about data protection because at its core it’s about protecting people”. As we discussed at the February 2024 IRMS Information Rights event, data protection has a ‘PR’ problem. This can perhaps be illustrated by imagining the book had the title ‘Protecting People in Social Housing’. I have seen stats that show 16.4% of households in England are occupied by social renters. That’s a lot of people and those people deserve to be treated with fairness, respect and dignity, which is exactly what the data protection law seeks to ensure. Clare should be hugely proud of what she has achieved.” So if you want one of the books (and it *might* be the last ten at the discounted price, at least for a while) please order it using this link, which shows it is on backorder: https://lnkd.in/egsGippi
