Thank you to all of our Members who attended LA Tourism’s June Member Mixer at Sony Pictures Studios’ Scenic Arts Building! The event, which welcomed more than 250 of our valued Members, was not just a chance to showcase one of LA’s many “uniquely Los Angeles” venues but also a valuable opportunity for networking and connection. Some noteworthy vehicles from Sony Pictures productions and Garfield himself even made guest appearances, adding to the experience! Thank you to our friends and partners at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wolfgang Puck Catering and The Vanity Portrait Studio for your partnership and support.

The greatest trick the Oscars ever pulled was to convince everyone that it was the greatest award in the field of films, almost like the Nobel Prize for films. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they are fake. Any awards, especially for creative work are hugely subjective, so, there can never be one defining award that will consider you the world's best. It's not what the World Cup is to cricket, right? But the Oscars achieved this to the extent that it has become slang for any award. For example, you will find internet comments such as 'Oscar for overacting goes to', 'This guy should win the Oscar for his diving', etc. How did they achieve this? Firstly, one of the things that the academy is very particular about is that they are the last Awards show during the award season after the Golden Globes, Bafta, Indie Spirit awards etc, making it feel like they are the finale and the most important. There have been instances where the Academy has postponed their dates because other award shows changed theirs. This is where the perception of the brand is built. Secondly, the Oscars or the Academy Awards were historically the first of its kind award for filmmaking starting in 1929. All other awards like The Bafta, Grammys, Emmys, etc were all inspired by these awards. Not only did they have the first mover advantage, but they even were the first award show to be televised live. Thirdly, The glitz and the glamour associated with the event. You have celebrities from all over the world dressed in gorgeous and sophisticated attires grabbing the attention in all forms, making this award show aspirational. This glamour along with the live broadcast, makes the award show a global trending phenomenon. Last but not least, the studios and the celebrities make winning an Oscar a big deal by running marketing campaigns and using the tag Oscar nominee or Oscar winner in all marketing and publication materials further adding to the brand's perception. For me personally, I love the Oscars because it was those awards that introduced me to the world of artistic films that you would never see in mainstream theatres. Those movies showed me that cinema can be more than just for entertainment, it can be a powerful tool to portray the human condition. And I will always love them for it. #Oscars2024 #AcademyAwards #Oppenheimer #Barbie #MovieMarketing #AdvertisingInIndia

𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱? 🍿 How do we attract not just local and returning guests, but a diverse crowd of new visitors? Hasta La Vista, Baby! is always busy—both for dinner and drinks. Now, we've introduced the 'Hasta La Vista Movie Nights'! These events sold out in a minute. We transformed our theatre area (one of the four areas) into a rooftop cinema for old-time classics. The response? Absolutely phenomenal! We decided to diversify our space. So, if you have a beautiful venue, think outside the box! Turn that space into something unexpected. Events like these bring in different types of guests and build a sense of community. Even before announcing the next dates, we received lots of requests about when the next movie nights will be. And yes: we would make more revenue if we just kept our 'theatre' podium open for the public and do more turnover. But it's not always only about the revenue...🚀 And now? We're busy planning what to do next… 🕺

It is important to understand that there are two clear divisions in the British film industry currently and both need different types of investment. It is not a one solution for all! One is the role of British creatives and facilities used by international film companies. Continuing to offer tax incentives and top quality studio space is key here and it brings in training opportunities and development of British crew (and hopefully retention), but the money here does not get reinvested in British content. These are international companies saving money on their investments and their profits will go to their share holders, reinvest in their projects and pay their countries tax bills. This leads into the second part, the development of British Independent film itself. Having the likes of WB making Harry Potter, Barbie or Game of Thrones in the UK is great, but these productions have little impact on funding or the creation of British film content. Yes, we have the BFI and National Lottery offering grants for British productions, but £18million to partly invest is nothing really in comparison to the large standard American budgets, or even to the smaller budgets of £35million that saw the likes of Shaun of the Dead made. Even then, BFI backed films are at risk of not getting lying distribution and thus will not make a profit and not be able to reinvest in more British content. So what’s the solution here? For me, all investment is welcomed, but for British film content, the Government needs to create a ruling (like the French industry) that a percentage of UK cinema screenings should be independent british films. And not just stop there, but invest more into a distribution arm (with the likes of BBC, Film 4, RSC, etc) to not just get films in cinema but create an online platform - invest in content that makes a profit! Overall, we need government to see that just hosting other countries to make films in the UK, is not the solution and does not allow for true investment into a British Film Industry
Rocky times ahead are anticipated for UK exhibition, distribution and independent production heading into the new year:
