Along with microplastics, our children are also being exposed to PFAS or forever chemicals based on several studies. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗙𝗔𝗦? PFAS are polyfluoroalkyl substances that are chemicals found in a variety of products from non-stick cookware to raincoats. They are used for their water, stain and oil-repellent properties in manufacturing. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗙𝗔𝗦 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰? Over the lifetime of the product, PFAS chemical substances are released into the environment because they are highly persistent and volatile. In addition, they are bioaccumulative and toxic, so they do not break down in the environment, lending them the apt term, “forever chemicals”. Having said that, although there are regulations for PFAS for water... ☠ A study by IIT Madras study reveals presence of ‘forever chemicals’ in Chennai lakes, drinking water in in the Buckingham Canal, Adyar River and Chembarambakkam lake (Source: https://lnkd.in/d536tyHV) Additionally based on another study by the National Library of Medicine: ☠ The presence of PFAS has been reported in the surface/subsurface water and groundwater, including drinking water supplies. ☠ According to research based on a recursive regression model of India’s ICLS, groundwater use accounts for 38% of the total value of milk output, whereas surface water use accounts for 15% of the same output. ☠ Water from the Ganges river has detectable concentrations of PFAS chemicals, mainly PFOA and PFOS.
