It’s important that we have a way to measure how well we teach—and it’s challenging to find the right method. Our team has spent a long time developing one of our most important metrics: Time Spent Learning Well. This essential quality metric that helps us optimize for learning alongside growth. Highly recommend any Duolingo fan reads more about it to learn how TSLW shapes your experience: https://lnkd.in/ezguUUK8

I find it very interesting that the focus is on learning metrics as a top priority, rather than simply increasing the amount of time spent learning. Striking a balance between time spent and maximizing the learning experience is a great approach to deliver maximum value. I really enjoy learning Spanish on Duolingo. I feel motivated to maintain a daily practice streak and climb the leaderboard.

French and English are wonderfully learned on your platform; thank you so much for that. However, I gave up on Chinese after a couple of days because the app did not correct my pronunciation. I downloaded, paid for, and am now using a specialized app called HelloChinese because it constantly helps me correct my pronunciation. In Chinese, it is very important how you pronounce a syllable. The meaning can change drastically. I hope my feedback will help you improve your app!

Love this! I highly respect keeping learning as a key metric, not just growth or profit. This is also a great breakdown of how data may appear to be solid on the surface level, but in reality is quite biased. Our team is also wrestling with how to track if our users are having high-quality learning outcomes, so this is very insightful.

Amazing to see how you have iterated over time to improve your north star metric Luis. I just spent 4 hours on my flight yesterday learning the russian alphabet and for me the alphabet lessons were so much more powerful than starting the course immediately while being confused with the “easy” lessons. To me that was “learning well”.

If people are on the free version of Duolingo, they can get stuck doing the very same Hindi exercise 90 or 100 days in a row. Big problems at DL...

This is an interesting metric and will definitely help to know the true learning time on the app. But why can’t this metric be used in leaderboard in some form. Maybe combination of XP and Time Spent Learning Well. Duolingo

Super interesting and very timely for the upcoming Language Leaders Student Retention Summit I'm hosting. A great example of focusing on quality of learning, not just the quantity. Thanks Luis.

What I've done in some cases is invite my students to 'play' with me. When I've seen how some of them do it even better than me, I've felt so proud. What you guys are developing is awesome: a tool that measures how well we teach. You nailed Duolingo ! Thanks Luis von Ahn for sharing. I wish us all a great day 🎯

Buen análisis de aprendizaje. Tiene que ver también si el estudiante labora, los ejercicios son interesantes. Estoy aprendiendo portugués.
