During July and August of this year, I had the pleasure of working under Dr. Molly Fee with Zoya Kamran in the UNIQ+ University of Oxford internship researching US resettlement and asylum policy, but it quickly evolved into a much larger exploration of the refugee experience. The initial aim of the project was to use various sources to historicise US resettlement and asylum policy. This meant that we would read around the topic, create a database from the Congressional Record, compile proposed refugee admissions reports, compile the annual survey of refugees and reports, and go through interview transcripts to pull biographical data for each refugee interview. One of the most important things I learned in this project was in-depth understanding, as engaging in a research project helped me gain a deep understanding of the history, complexities, and nuances of U.S. resettlement and asylum policies. This kind of immersion in a subject can enhance my knowledge and expertise, which is so important to me as I would like to go further into researching asylum policy. Another thing it helped me improve was my analytical skills. Our research projects often involved analysing large amounts of data, synthesising information from various sources, and drawing conclusions, which refined my analytical skills and my critical thinking. The project allowed me to critically examine sources and evidence and benefited my critical thinking skills, allowing me to assess information more objectively and make informed judgments. Another important thing I learned was collaboration, working with my peers and supervisor allowed me to learn how to work effectively in a team, manage differing opinions, and leverage collective strengths. The last thing I learned, and in my opinion, the most important, was that this project led to the realisation that there is always more to learn. This has encouraged me to think more about continuing to expand my knowledge and skills even after this project is completed. filled with information we found through our research, therefore effectively documenting the changes and continuations in US policy of resettlement and asylum. I'd like to thank Dr Molly Fee and the whole team at UNIQ+ for making this experience possible, the expertise and skills I have gained from this internship are invaluable!

Interesting to see growing interest and investment in the inclusion of refugees in the host community. Such community-based approaches are at the heart of the protection efforts.

A week ago, the most important experience of my entire career so far came to an end. I had heard about UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency internships before at conferences organised by United Nations Association Poland and UN Information Center Poland so I am pleased to have finally completed such an internship. It was a very intense and developing time. I don't think I have ever learned so many things in such a short time. Below is a list of the most important skills I acquired: ❗ I learned Results Based Management. I now know how Budgets are created, what the elements are and the difference between OP and OL Budgets. I can easily navigate between Outcomes and Outputs.  ❗ I learned advanced functions in Excel. In the beginning, I only knew the basics. Now, thanks to the teachings of my supervisors, I can use Filtering, Pivot Tables, etc.  ❗ I learnt how to manage the Partnerships. I know how to analyse reports, what the Mid-Year Monitoring looks like, how the Call of Expression of Interest process works and what the next steps are leading to the signing of an agreement. I received introductory training in the use of the new PROMS software. ❗ I learned how to manage Small Grant Agreements. ❗ I learned what the process of creating Requisitions and Receipts looks like. ❗ I learned how the Programme Unit works with Project Control, Finance, Supply and Admin. I would like to thank all my colleagues very much! I am extremely grateful for all the discussions, insights and how you have shared your knowledge with me on topics such as Access to Asylum, Legal Aid, Economic Inclusion, Solutions, CBP, CBI, Child Protection, MHPSS, GVB, Education, Shelter, Security, PSEA, Information Management, Communication and of course HR. It is not goodbye because I know this is only the beginning of my work in the humanitarian sector, and we will meet again someday 🌍

During my recent academic journey at LegaloPedia Educatinia , I had the privilege of completing a research internship and practical experience that culminated in the development of a comprehensive research paper focused on "The rights of refugees in international law".This endeavor allowed me to delve deep into a pressing and complex issue within th realm of global human rights. The internship provided me with a unique opportunity to work alongside seasoned professionals and scholars in the field of international law. I was exposed to various facets of refugee rights, including asylum procedures, protection mechanisms, and the legal frameworks governing the rights of refugees across different countries and regions. This hands-on experience allowed me to witness the practical challenges faced by refugees and those working to protect their rights. As I delved into the research process, I explored the historical development of international refugee law, beginning with the 1951 Refugee Convention and its subsequent protocols. I also examined the role of various international organizations, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in ensuring the protection of refugees worldwide. My research paper was the culmination of months of rigorous investigation and analysis. It delved into critical topics such as the principle of non-refoulement, the right to seek asylum, and the challenges posed by the increasing number of internally displaced persons. Moreover, I assessed the effectiveness of international legal mechanisms in addressing the evolving needs and rights of refugees in a world marked by conflicts, environmental crises, and mass migrations. In conclusion, my research internship and the subsequent research paper on the rights of refugees in international law provided me with a profound understanding of the complexities and challenges faced by displaced individuals worldwide. It reinforced my commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of refugees and deepened my appreciation for the importance of international law in safeguarding human dignity and justice. Wrapping up my postgraduate programme in Humanitarian and Refugee Studies, my colleagues and I decided to carry out a social impact project in lieu of an internship required by the programme. We presented the idea to the Institute and it was approved. The moments, experiences and lessons we had and learnt during the project is one that I relive till this day. The technical aspect of the project and challenges is an area I hope to share another day. Today I am focused on the fulfillment that comes with our job as humanitarian and development workers. My colleagues and I decided to establish Humanitarian and Peace Club in selected secondary schools in Ibadan. Our objectives were simple: 1. To introduce the concepts of Humanitarianism and Peace while also fostering the culture of Volunteerism. 2. To expand learning beyond the formal design of the classroom. 3. To develop leadership abilities of the students by making the project participant driven providing opportunities for early responsibilities. One exciting aspect of our job is being on the field. It is surreal. To experience the joy in the heart of the beneficiaries/participants, feeling the passion ignited and the growth process is satisfying. In as much as these projects are geared towards the beneficiaries and participants, the impact usually cut both ways. The impact was such that no party wanted it to come to an end, not the students, not us and not the stakeholders. For the 16 weeks duration of the project, relationships were built, connections were established such that one has to constantly remind one's self of the principles of neutrality and impartiality.
