Why not create a body of work and store all of your podcast appearances in one place? How about dedicating a page on your website to all your appearances? That way, when you pitch to be a guest, you can include a link to this page so that they can check out how you come across in the audio space. It sells you in your absence. Just finished up my first guest appearance on a business podcast. When we finished, the host said, "Man, it's so great working with a pro." What did he mean by that? I'm not a pro podcaster. Nobody hardly knows my name. He meant I: - Brought my own energy instead of only relying on his. - Came prepared with multiple talking points, but let him guide the conversation (it's his audience after all). - Listened for him to tee me up, and acted on it when he did. - Understood the goal; to deliver meaty value AND entertain. Years of performance experience means this all comes naturally to me. But even if you don't, you can still show up like a pro by asking yourself one question: "How can I make this person's job easier?" Whether it's a client, your boss, or a podcast guest host, understand THEIR goals and proactively help them achieve it. What are ways that you show up like a pro?

Most people shouldn’t start a podcast. They’re only doing it because they think they should or someone told them they should. Most people waste time on all the shiny objects like the name, logo, microphone, studio and so on. Once they start the actual grind, they realise it’s more work than expected and quit 👀. Unless someone is paying me, it doesn’t make sense for me to go for coffee with every person in my DMs who is “thinking of starting a podcast.” As a founder or investor, think hard about the questions I mention in this article before you start. The biggest one is “Why?” I’ve met incredible people through podcasting and it’s opened up so many doors for me. This is only through being consistent and having a clear vision of how the podcast fits into my grander vision. What's the power of a podcast? There are a lots, and in the coming week's I'll share more, but let's start with my favourite. Nothing expands your network like a podcast does. Let's use the typical weekly podcast for example. Call it 45 new episodes a week to give the host a break once in a while. That's 45 times a year you get to publicly talk to, and have an intimate conversation with 🤝 Partners in your industry 🏷️ Potential customers 🛍️ Existing customers 📚 Your favourite authors 🎅 Anyone you can think of It's easy to get into the trap of vanity metrics (and downloads do matter), but before you even have a single listener, you have the chance to have dozens of conversations a year. Now add in the metrics, and imagine a conference with 45 speakers, and packed rooms in each session. Name a higher ROI, I'll wait.

A lot of people start a podcast thinking it’s a great way to promote their expertise, and it *is* that. But not in the way you may be thinking. It isn’t and shouldn’t always be you, you, you. And if it is, you might come across as pushy and salesy. Not exactly the image you want to promote. Successful podcasts have guests. Lots of them. Very frequently if not every episode. And while the benefits of focusing on others more than yourself are many, having guests on your podcast results in 3 major wins: > The Endorsement of Credibility: you’re endorsing the guest with your audience, and they’re doing the same for you with theirs > Greater Exposure: their audience becomes part of your audience, and vice versa > The Rule of Reciprocity: do something nice for someone, and they’ll want to return the favor Have guests. As a "Founder" 10 years in to my own journey I loved hearing this and watching Brian Chesky talk so passionately about the need for more entrepreneurs in society. As Steven Bartlett says - you need to watch this, as it's such an inspiring message. I've always had the entrepreneurial spirit inside me, from being a kid that would take on more paper-rounds than anyone else, to the point where i'd have to ask my mum to drive me round to deliver them as the bags were too heavy to carry on my bike! To rounding up my friends on the street that I lived on - where i'd go and knock on doors, to get my friends to wash peoples cars (I was front of house, getting the orders lined up and never actually washed a single car!). I had lots of different jobs throughout school, college, university, doing cleaning jobs, working at a hospital, to taking on my first job in London which did not have a basic salary element to the package. Always pushing. Funnily I've never raised money or had to with Fraser Dove International, we bootsrapped, were profitable very early and grew as quickly and as sustainably as we could. I love Brian's message about the mountain, it really hits home. Also the understanding of the positives and negatives of being a "Founder". I love problem solving. I love pushing myself and others around me. I love creating helping people in their own entrepreneurial journey. I challenge myself to be inspiring and inspired by the amazing people I surround myself with every. single. day. I hope you enjoy this video!
