At Make Us Visible, we've teamed up with Friends of the National Asian Pacific American Museum (NAPAM) to gather support for the creation of the National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Over the past two months, we've collected letters from 213 elected officials across 17 states expressing their support for a Smithsonian museum to share and honor the vibrant cultures and histories of our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. These letters will be delivered to Congress. In 2022, Congress passed a law establishing a commission to create a report on how to make this museum a reality. Once established, this bi-partisan commission will have 18 months to develop and present their report. Congress will then need to authorize the creation and funding of the museum before site selection and construction can begin. The Museum faces a long road ahead. Fortunately, Friends of NAPAM are a group of citizens who’ve passionately taken on the task of keeping the momentum going on this effort. You can learn more about the Museum’s progress and how you can get involved at https://friendsofnapam.org. #ISupportNAPAM #AANHPIHeritageMonth

👀 Did you missed the online panel discussions during the #ChinatownReimagined Forum in #Montreal last September? Watch the English recording of Chinatown is not a museum here! French recording coming soon! Chinatown is not a museum, it is a living community! The common perception of urban Chinatowns as historic tourist attractions impacts the priorities and choices that cities and governments make for revitalization and development. Who gets to have a future in the neighbourhood and whose needs are ignored? A traditional place of sanctuary for many marginalized groups, Chinatowns are home to seniors, low-income residents and several others facing linguistic, cultural and other social barriers. The neighbourhood is also facing a challenge of increased populations that have issues with substance abuse and mental health. How can we center the needs of Chinatown’s housed residents in the future of these neighbourhoods and find ways to foster and grow the intangible cultural heritage of Chinatown that is built on the interactions and relationships of its residents and living communities? This panel reimagines a future for Chinatown centered around quality of life, access to services, needs of residents, both housed and unhoused, equitable development that grows culture & community, and approaches to land ownership and housing that look to retain and grow the residential base of Chinatown. We visited the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History today in Washington, DC and it was just fabulous. We highly recommend it to all Linked In members visiting DC. Visitors are able to enter the museum until 4:00 p.m. Passes are released at 8:00 a.m., for time slots up to 30 days out. Same-day passes are released beginning at 8:15 a.m. They are free to reserve. It’s a little more complicated than needed (eg you have to enter your email twice) so leave some time for filling it out via your cell phone on site! All groups (schools, families, educational groups, etc.) larger than nine must use the group reservation link. Important Conditions: The Smithsonian’s timed pass reservation system is for visitors’ personal use only, and Smithsonian timed passes are valid only for the stated visitor(s), guest(s), date, and time. Passes may not be sold or transferred. Reservations that violate these conditions may be cancelled. Once inside you are going to absolutely love it! The presentations are on six floors so just pick one to get the most out of your visit. We picked Concourse 3 : the earliest period of African-American history but other floors cover cultural developments, including music and film so do a little planning! #nationalmuseumofafricanamericanhistory

So much to say about this project: 1.) We had an engaged client who trusted us to take risks 2.) We aligned clearly on vision from the get-go 3.) We had gorgeous content to design around and be inspired from And I think it’s paid off. We won an award. We’re getting some attention through various industry channels. It’s nice to feel validated, but the secret sauce was this: we had a client who shared our values. We’ve been talking a lot internally about our superpowers, our stories and values. One thing remains consistent: We believe the mundane can be marvelous. That being status quo is actually riskier than digging for authenticity. That brands who are brave and have a POV will always cut through the noise. Kudos to our amazing clients, friends and collaborators over at The Mansion. If you are local and a history buff, please do yourself a favor and visit (or at least poke around the site’s virtual tour!) The Louise Steinman von Hess Foundation entrusted Bom Bom to create a unique website for Wright’s Ferry Mansion, an 18th-century historic house museum. Because of its close quarters and faithful historic preservation, visitation is limited. To serve those unable to visit the property, an interactive experience was created to offer a rich digital journey through the Mansion. We’re pleased to announce that we’ve won an Honorable Mention Award from awwwards.com for our work on this project, and the site is being featured on siteofsites.co! So inspiring presentation by Simon Njami, an independent writer and curator from Paris, on how museums should reload to represent all times in the same location and provoke contradiction, to include all places in a contradictory dialogue on the notion of the space, and to incorporate all the different notions of discourses. Museums and museum professionals should think about for whom they are doing their programs and what the museum is for.
We propose you review Simon Njami's speech at CIMAM's Annual Conference in Buenos Aires in 2023. In his presentation, Njami raises the question of how we can imagine a museum in 2023 that does not carry visions of the past and whether we should close them down and start afresh with concepts that align with our contemporary needs. He proposes two notions that could be useful in reconceptualizing the notion of the museum: the sharing of the sensible (or sensitive) developed by the French philosopher Jacques Rancière, and the question defined by the German Ernst Bloch as the essential, the insurmountable, the very question of the WE. You can listen to this insightful presentation and explore other papers from CIMAM's Annual Conferences of 2023 and previous years. Check out CIMAM TV as an additional resource for your research and explorations on museum practices over the years. #CIMAM23 #TheCoCreativeMuseum #CIMAMTV #CIMAMresearch https://lnkd.in/dUjBkP2t

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has declared the theme for this year's International Museum Day (May 18th, 2024) to be "Museums for Education and Research." Here in Nigeria, our museums are brimming with potential to be vibrant hubs of learning and discovery! I Suggest that the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) and all museums under their authority organize events for school students and the general public in their respective states. This would be a great way to raise awareness about the importance of museums. The theme is "Museums for Education and Research." Ideally, the National Commission would already be aware of International Museum Day, which takes place on May 18th, 2024. However, if they are not, this theme aligns perfectly with the spirit of the day. This IMD, let's celebrate the incredible potential of Nigerian museums and monuments sites! Share your favorite museum experiences in the comments below. Cc: ncmmng Sir gbile holloway #internationalmuseumDay #nigerianmuseums #educationandresearch #culturaltreasures

In a recent comedy bit, Taylor Tomlinson suggested starting museum visits in the gift shop, saying: "I don't want to look like an idiot standing in front of an unimportant piece of art for too long... What made the magnets? What made the postcards? What can I take home with me?" Despite the humorous take, it highlights a critical issue in the museum world. Are we too focused on the masterpieces, missing out on the emotional and educational value of the entire collection? 🎨🏛️ Museums should be spaces of exploration and connection, where every piece can evoke personal responses and inspire us. The obsession with only the famous works can overshadow this. As someone passionate about cultural heritage, I believe we need to shift this perspective. It's important to celebrate all the pieces, famous or not, and encourage visitors to discover the stories and emotions behind them. 🌟 By fostering a more inclusive appreciation, museums can improve our cultural experiences. Let’s make every visit about discovery and connection, not just ticking off the masterpieces. 🌍✨ #MuseumExperience #CulturalHeritage #ArtAppreciation #MuseumVisit
