Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Bipan Kapur, the Complex General Manager of Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Convention Centre and Four Points by Sheraton KLCC. His 35 years of service in hospitality truly reflects his commitment to service innovation. What struck me the most was the genuine hospitality exhibited by his team during my stay. In an age where exceptional service is the exception rather than the norm, they stood out as a beacon of hospitality excellence. Reflecting on this experience, here are a few key behaviors from the hospitality industry that all industries can emulate: 🌺 Customer-Centric Approach: Hospitality businesses prioritize the needs and comfort of their guests above all else. Emulating this approach means putting the customer at the center of every interaction – good or challenging. 🌱 Personalized Service: Hospitality professionals excel at understanding individual preferences and tailoring experiences accordingly. The phrase everybody has a boss is very true. If you work for a hotel chain with many properties you can reasonably expect there are positions such as: regional managers, various boards of directors, VP of hotel operations, purchasing directors, marketing teams, CEO’s, etc. The bigger the company, the more positions there are. After all, the owner cannot fill every role. The GM of a hotel, even though an important role, amounts to no more than middle management. They have people who answer to them, but in turn the GM has higher entities to answer to in regards to the hotels performance. So you can definitely go higher than a hotel GM’s position. The big catch here is the higher you climb the ladder, the further you get away you get from dealing with guests on a personal level. That may not appeal to everyone who goes into hospitality in the first place.

What is the difference between a Hotel Manager and a General Manager? Traditionally, hotel managers focus on specific departments, general managers hold a broader oversight and strategic responsibility for the entire hotel. Due to this, a hotel manager is likely to spend most of their time on site at the hotel, whereas general managers will often be out and about, building and maintaining connections. However, in Malaysia I have noticed that over the years some has interpreted that a hotel manager manages a small property while a GM manages a larger one with more facilities. So, there are some properties with both hotel and general managers. General managers occupy a higher position in the organizational structure and have authority over hotel managers. This hierarchy ensures clear direction and accountability while allowing hotel managers to operate within their respective departments with the support and guidance of the GM. Effective communication and collaboration are vital for aligning departmental objectives with the hotel's overall goals. Regular communication between these roles facilitates the exchange of information, ideas, and challenges. This allows for better coordination, decision-making, and ensures that departmental objectives are in sync with the broader vision set by the general manager. Empowering hotel managers to execute the general manager's vision is an integral part of bridging the gap. By delegating authority and providing support, GMs enable hotel managers to make decisions and implement strategies within their departments. This empowerment creates a sense of ownership, accountability, and leads to innovation and creativity.

From the time I started working at Fairmont Ambassador Seoul, there are couple things that I have realized that are very crucial at hotel industry: - Team members need to work together cohesively to deliver top-notch service to guests. - Collaboration and teamwork among hotel staff can lead to increased efficiency in daily operations. When team members understand each other's roles and responsibilities, tasks can be completed more effectively and in a timely manner. - The most important part, Effective communication is key in the hotel industry to ensure smooth operations and guest satisfaction. Being a team player and understanding other team members' communication styles can help avoid misunderstandings and improve overall communication within the team. - A positive work environment where team members support and respect each other contributes to high employee morale. This, in turn, leads to increased job satisfaction and productivity.
