What I love about this announcement more than anything, is that HMV is a brand I grew up with; in fact I would hate to think how much of my student loan was spent on vinyl, DVD's and other items. Of course the way we consume media changed, and it's no lie that HMV took a couple of big beatings, but they reinvented themselves and are now getting to enjoy the resurgence of people wanting to listen to music via record players once more. It makes me really smile, and I love getting the chance to pop into their stores when I can. The second part of this announcement that excites me is that many retailers are growing again - even with the tough economic climate and the changes in the way consumers buy. It seems that people are returning to high streets, and the doom and gloom may not be quite as bad as we thought. And this positions #Quinyx perfectly. We support retailers like HMV in ensuring their labour forecasts can align to predicted sales volumes. **Westfield boosted by raft of retailers upsizing stores** The owner of Westfield, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), has reported continued growth in store upsizes across both Westfield UK shopping centres. The property giant said that both Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City saw a rise in demand from retailers that wanted to increase the space of their stores. Retailers including WHISTLES, beauty specialist Rituals UK & Ireland and luxury jeweler Bucherer AG all expanded their stores. Meanwhile, URW reported store openings for brands seeking to embrace larger spaces to meet increased demand, such as Zara in Westfield Stratford City, which upped its store space by almost 30% and EE Studio’s flagship store, which tripled its store footprint at Westfield London. The shopping centre giant said it had a “strong pipeline” of further brand openings scheduled for the second half of the year. New Report | Dublin Retail Market Q2 2023 According to Bernadine Hogan, Head of Retail at CBRE Ireland, “We have seen positive leasing momentum and new store openings in the first half of the year across the main city high streets and shopping centres in Dublin. The opening of new ‘Nike’ stores at Blanchardstown Centre and Dundrum Town Centre, were a particular highlight in Q2, of which we were pleased to be involved in both transactions. Separately, in the city centre, we were pleased to advise Foot Locker in acquiring their new ‘flagship’ long-term letting, in the former H&M store on Henry Street. The strength of Ireland’s consumption patterns, combined with population growth continues to make Dublin and regional Ireland an attractive destination for retailers to locate. According to data from data.gov.ie, footfall levels between Grafton Street and College Green have soared by an impressive 123% when compared to Q1 2023. The revival and transformation of Henry Street and the influx of international brands flocking to areas such as Wicklow Street, Exchequer Street, South Anne Street, and Duke Street demonstrate that Dublin city is still a hugely attractive place to do business both north and south. I'm deeply saddened to read the news just now that the iconic Smith & Caughey's is announcing plans to close https://lnkd.in/gS3ZeGqk Having lived in the UK for 10 years, I returned to New Zealand with hopes that Smith & Caughey's might have evolved to be NZ's version of Liberty's smooshed up with Selfridges – beloved institutions with a rich history and loyal following. Unfortunately, it hasn't quite reached those heights, but it could! I don't want to see Smith & Caughey's close. What if we came together as a LinkedIn community to help build a new vision for the board to consider? What changes would you make to keep this incredible brand alive? - Relocate? Move out of the city centre and close the Newmarket store. Focus on one key store in a high foot traffic area? - Streamline range : Reduce the range of products and concentrate on the best-selling lines? - Inject new life: Introduce offerings to revitalise the brand? Nice to be quoted on the BBC News site in relation to the sale of the Frenchgate Shopping Centre, speaking on behalf of Doncaster Chamber (whilst Daniel Fell is taking a well-deserved week of leave). I know that a few people are sceptical, but this must be seen as good news for the city and a welcome investment into Doncaster. A fresh impetus at The Frenchgate can help to fill vacant units, increase footfall, and deliver new brands. It���s not a silver bullet by itself, but if it brings more shoppers into Doncaster, then the benefits can cascade out to the city more widely.   I know that Dan, and his team at the Chamber, alongside other Team Doncaster stakeholders, are looking forward to working with Michael Murray and Frasers Group on the back of this investment. The news comes at an opportune time, given that a new City Centre Board has been developed, led by Tariq Shah OBE and there are a variety of strategies in play all geared to re-energising the city centre in the months and years ahead. This includes Doncaster 35 – the Chamber’s own, recently launched new business manifesto, with the city centre being one of our four core pillars of focus. We have three top priorities in this space over the next decade: 1.     To create a safe, clean, and accessible city centre. 2.     Update the offer for businesses, residents and visitors. 3.     Innovate in the use of green spaces and the built environment. Following the Greggs Bistro, it's amazing to see yet another inspired pairing of North East Institutions - it deserves a round of applause. 👏👏👏 🎄 Every North East child is brought up with a visit to Fenwick window during the festive period, sausage rolls are known as Geordie dummies and if you don't have a pic of your first toon strip, hadaway man! What's captured me is the parallels between Newcastle United and Fenwick. 🛍 The journey NUFC have been on these past few years, written off and now thriving and winning. Gone are the fears we were about to be renamed Sports Direct FC, we're in Fenwicks baby! It's hard not to align it with the journey of department stores and the UK high street.
