Local entrepreneurs took center stage at our recent Tech Tank event, where Piercd, a new venture by the founders of EMBARK Fine Jewelry, was crowned the 2024 Emerging Startup of the Year, and Byline, a print media-focused startup, claimed second place.🏆 Inspired by the harrowing ear-piercing experience of one founder’s daughter, the co-founders of Embark Fine Jewelry—Erin Judice, Katie Cooper Kennedy, and Michelle Judice Robertson—set out to create Piercd, a safer, more comfortable alternative to the traditional ear-piercing experience. Similarly, the idea for Byline came to founder Shanna Dickens as a personal pain point while working in the print media industry. Observing both daily influxes of story ideas from individuals and growing industry coverage gaps, Dickens envisioned Byline as a bridge between traditional print media and modern technology. As a startup, I am looking to innovate in every aspect of my business. It was good to see how another business owner, a café owner in this case, had innovated at their business. Instead of using another box to store the coffee cups, he had started using the milk cartons. When I asked him why, he had two simple reasons: 1. He goes through a lot of milk cartons 2. The milk cartons are stronger than the coffee trays that he would normally give his customers. Another reason I would add is that the milk cartons would use up a lot of the space in his recycle bin. This way his customers recycle the milk cartons at their homes. I also had a pleasant customer experience and in the end both of us knew that I would be going to his café more often. This is a good example of how a small improvement can lead to a larger impact in the long run. What innovations have you observed around you or developed? Taking a new start up business to one that is professionally recognised within the industry, might require you to make changes to your branding so you can take the next step within your business. Halimy from Catering At Its Finest began to review her branding once it became evident that a simple zip lock bag wasn’t going to get her closer to the vision she had for her business. It was decided that new packaging and new branding was essential not only for ease of use within the business and to extend the shelf life of her products but to help get the products purchased and on the shelf of other retailers and into the homes of those who had previously supported her small business. A quick chat with our team showed Hamily that her packaging did not need to be as big of an investment as she thought thanks to small MOQs that would also give her to flexibility to test the market. ❓ Does an innovative business model idea always have to become a corporate startup to be successful ❓   The answer is definitely no. First of all, becoming a corporate startup is by no means a guarantee for success and market entry. At MAHLE all corporate startups have to #pitch once a year to the #MAHLE management to get their invest for the next year approved and to discuss the next steps. One step can always be to end the business at every time. However, we also have great ideas from employees that did not make it through the incubation process, for example, but are still being successfully #pursued in one of our #business units. This is what happened with the idea of developing a system for bicycles that brings #safety features to bikes. The #bikeEYE team worked on the business idea during the European Incubator 2019, but due to the strategic fit and same sales channels with MAHLE SmartBike Systems, the idea was pursued in one of our business units. The original Incubator team worked with the development team in Spain for 3 years - developing the product, testing the system and supporting the Spanish team with their know-how until the project was finally handed over to them. And of course, their goal is still to bring the product to market. 🚲 So even if it is not a startup - if the business model idea is good enough, there are several other ways to develop and successfully #implement a new business.
