The silencing must stop…
Does America the Great censor voices? Does the Home of the Brave shy away from the past? Without Ruby Bridges, are we as brave? Without Dr. King, is it really liberty and justice for all? Without our values, are we who we say we are? Book bans are removing lessons of liberty, freedom, and bravery from schools across the nation. Without those lessons, students are missing out on stories that represent the core values we all believe in. Black history is Alberta history, and Canadian history. #DYK - The Last Best West | Historica Canada. “At the turn of the century, many Black families in Oklahoma wanted to escape the state’s racial violence and discrimination for a new start in Canada’s ‘Last Best West.’ The Canadian government, however, didn’t want them to settle in those vast, fertile western provinces. To stem the tide of Black immigration, the government began a secret campaign of disinformation. Uncovering this deception from 1911 can help us think more critically about the media we consume today.” #BHM #BHM2024

This is not new. Although a new generation of advocacy, a new movement has been born, there are many who stood up and spoke out first. On December 4, 1969, a young civil rights leader, Fred Hampton, aged 21, was tragically killed in a police raid. Hampton, a figurehead in the Black Panther Party, exemplified dedication to racial equality, social justice, and community upliftment. His innovative approach to coalition-building and his critique of systemic injustices paved the way for many of the strategies used in activism today. Imagine the impact he and others like him could have had with the technological tools and platforms we now have at our disposal! For those of you who may not know about him, here are some basic facts: Core beliefs- Racial Equality and Social Justice: Hampton was deeply committed to the fight against racial discrimination and sought to advance civil rights. Community Programs: He was instrumental in developing and promoting community-based programs. These included free breakfast programs for children, health clinics, and educational programs, which were part of the BPP's community services. Anti-Poverty Efforts: He was a strong advocate for the poor and worked to address issues of poverty, believing that economic justice was a crucial part of the civil rights struggle. Coalition Building: He believed in forming alliances across racial and ethnic lines, understanding the power of unity in fighting against systemic oppression. He helped to establish the "Rainbow Coalition," which included groups like the Young Lords (a Puerto Rican organization) and the Young Patriots (a group of white Appalachians). Critique of Police Brutality and the Criminal Justice System: He was vocal against police brutality and the unfair practices within the criminal justice system, especially those affecting African American communities. Empowerment Through Education and Political Awareness: He emphasized the importance of education and political awareness for empowerment. He encouraged people, especially the youth, to understand their rights and the political system. His legacy continues to influence civil rights and social justice movements to this day. #humanityfirst #FredHampton #socialjustice #civilrightsmovement #challengethestatusquo #palestine
“we don’t think you fight fire with fire best; we think you fight fire with water best. we’re going to fight racism, not with racism, but we’re going to fight with solidarity. we say we’re not going to fight capitalism with black capitalism, but we’re going to fight it with socialism.” on this day in 1969, the us empire took brother chairman #fredhampton from us. he was 21 years old. chairman hampton has, and continues to be, the most influential + inspirational figure to my development as a radical leftist. he was uncompromising in his belief in cross-racial working class solidarity. he led with love + hope + principle. may he forever rest in power. photo: @hamptonthink (ig)

#Question: Do #parenting & society’s use of problematic #philosophy & bad theology prevent personal growth & perpetuate resentment/estrangement in kids as they grow up to be adults? #postcolonialism provided new #freedoms met with, #dogmas, rules and the #bureacraticphenomenon (the #irony of #independence). Today’s episode of #theneoliberalroundpodcast is quite powerful, #ethnographic and #esoteric, entitled “I could’ve been a #UsainBolt or like a #SerenaWilliams but….” The episode features my twin brother #RicardoMckenzie and Co-Producer/host #DonteNelson and of course #RenaldoMcKenzie, Your host. We went deep looking at issues of success as it is affected by ineffective parenting and society; raising and exploring the question: how poverty/parenting/society’s institutions use of problematic philosophy and bad #theology prevent personal growth and perpetuate estrangement and resentment in children as they grow up. https://lnkd.in/eZN4yr_i YouTube
