According to the APA's 2023 Work in America Survey, a sense of connection and community is one of the five workplace essentials for ensuring workers' psychological health and well-being, as outlined by the U.S. Surgeon General. Creating this feeling of belonging can be difficult, as many groups feel that they don't belong when they're at work. Belonging manifests itself in several ways in the workplace, requiring a varied approach on the part of leadership. Employees should feel encouraged to share their individual perspectives, confident they can be authentic at work without negative consequences. Also important is that employees develop meaningful relationships with their colleagues.
