Three years ago,
I embarked on a mission to breathe life back into the 60+ year-old #grapevines on my parent’s property, after a second tree had perished within the original six.
For three decades, these vines endured neglect and improper care, while family members strolled past the arbor, oblivious to their potential. The grapes I once knew from my childhood had withered into inedible, rotten mush for the last 15 years. The sight of overgrown, tangled vines infested with spotted lanternflies struggling to bear fruit tugged at my heartstrings.
They deserved a second chance.
It took nearly a year for me to muster the courage to initiate the pruning process after extensive #research, supported by my previous work experience at Beneduce Vineyards and the education vineyard event hosted by Northeast Organic Farming Association of NJ. I approached this endeavor with cautious optimism, fearing the possibility of harming them, especially since the vines were now shrouded in shade, trapped between built up home development.
Nonetheless, here we are, only after approximately a season and a half of dedicated care. I worked tirelessly, disregarding my father's well-intentioned yet inaccurate advice, focusing on extensive pruning, deep composting, and straightening crooked trunks. The result? A bountiful #harvest of sweet, juicy grapes once more.
As I continue on this #journey, striving to bring the energy back to the hollowed trunks, I look forward to exploring various propagation methods. I'm posting this not only out of pride for my accomplishments thus far but also to encourage others to embark on their own learning journeys or start those long-delayed personal projects. I assure you, the satisfaction is immeasurable.
I have a deep passion for food, but even more so for the process of learning how to create it. Embark on a journey of discovery!

What a great project!
